There was a 3rd party dependency where you could buy IOTA directly via your wallet through moonpay. Moonpay had leaks which lead to the IOTA Wallet hack as we know it. The coordinator which verifies value transaction got stopped immediately thus denying the hacker any funds.
PLUS the foundation paid everyone who got affected by the hack BACK, that has never happened before in any other crypto.

The protocol never got hacked nor is it possible to do that. Bitcoin and every other DLT had the same problems. Look at ETH hack for example or bitcoin inflation bug.
