No, you don't understand.
Normal computers can't mine bitcoins, they are too slow, even a $5000 PC can't mine bitcoins for all intents and purposes.
You actually need special hardware, Bitcoin Miners, there are different prices for those though, even some cheap ones, but not very good.

Coinbase is just to acquire BTC with fiat. You send BTC to an exchange to start trading it for other coins with other people.

Blockfolio is just an app to manage your crypto holdings and keep track of them, but it's not actually linked to anything you own. You put in your own numbers. It also lets you set price alerts.

A few questions:
1. What's the best strategy to minimize fees? Gemini looks like it has lower fees than Coinbase, but that's all I can tell so far.

2. Should I let Gemini hold my ETH or should I get my own wallet?

3. What exchange should I use to buy alt coins? GDAX has no fees for maker trades but I don't see it talked about that much here. Poloniex only has no fees for high volume maker trades, and Bittrex has a flat 0.25% fee. Isn't GDAX better, then? Or is there some reason I shouldn't use it?

Bitstamp. I've never had any issues with them, their site is stable and doesn't lag much when shit goes down as opposed to Kraken for instance. Since people like using Bitstamp to withdraw, it's also regularly a lot cheaper than Kraken and BFX, so it's great to buy on. Once you've bought, just move them to another exchange (Bittrex/Kraken/Polo) if you're into altcoin trading.
