Writing a cash-covered put means you get a premium, and in turn may be liable to purchase 100 x Strike shares from an options bearer in the future if the underlying drops below the strike. This is roughly equivalent to placing a limit sell order and receiving a bonus for it.

Writing a share-covered call means you get a premium, and in turn may be liable to sell 100 of your shares, each at the strike price. Covered calls literally guarantee you more net income than you would receive just holding, with the only caveat being that you may miss out on bigger gains.

Writing covered options is intrinsically different from buying options, because a bought option may see its premium dwindle to 0, especially if its expiration is close and the price action doesn't work in your favor.
