don't do it lol. I'm in Canada and half my shit is in USD because all we got are financials, oil/energy, real estate funds. All of those are going to take 2-3 years to recover. At this point in time, you're better off holding tech shit. My bet is on TSM just like half of /smg/, already up ~40% on my initial investment, and i'm still very bullish on its future prospects that I averaged up just under $80 and I'm not taking my profits for at least a few years now that Samsung continues to fall behind TSM.

You can have a 401k and an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) they are completely separate. I prefer Roth IRA, but you should look up the difference. You cannot withdraw or put more than allowed per year so what you have is locked in, if you lose it you cannot recoup. This means avoiding losses is the very important. Additionally, you are able to sell covered calls in an IRA, this is the only options strategy allowed in retirement accounts, ask your broker about how.

SPY is based on the S&P 500 index, it contains only stocks from that index.
QQQ is based on the NASDAQ index, it contains only stocks from that index.
The main difference is that QQQ is "tech heavy" and SPY is just huge companies. This means QQQ has more growth while SPY is more stable.
SOXX is mainly semiconductor companies and everyone needs semis, its literally the future.
You don't "hold" SOXL and TQQQ because they are 3x leveraged ETFs which means they have decay, which means they lose money in a flat or up and down market. The main problem they suffer from is that "Percent losses are bigger than percent gains."
Example:
Day 1 lose 10%, day 2 gain 10%
Assuming QQQ and TQQQ start at $100 on the first day
QQQ goes down to $90 then goes up to $99
TQQQ goes down to $70 then goes up only to $91

If you need to ask about leveraged ETFs, then you should stay away.

>Is tech currently as invincible as doombulls say it is?

Tech is a good investment but no, it is not invincible, and if/when another day of reckoning comes, TQQQ will be first on the chopping block.

Then it'll come back and return to ATHs. The thing about technological growth is that it doesn't conform to the pace or patterns of other sectors. It's easy to look at tech stocks soaring and to keep saying, "this has to correct, this has to correct". Correct to what? Nasdaq 10K? Nasdaq 5K? MSFT 150? AAPL 300?

Tech megacaps are some of the most commercially and financially secure companies in the world, and civilization is so reliant on technology that short of a nuclear war or an asteroid striking the earth, technology will never, ever disappear or be usurped by another kind of industry.

The problem isnt historical performance, its the uncertainty of the current market, another down trend or even just flat line would yield poorly. I would say go in QQQ and then if a downturn occurs, switch to TQQQ on the upwards trend. Thats not easy to do though and there are many inexperienced investors, such a strategy could lead them to disaster. Just keep it simple and dont be greedy.

My biggest concern is what happens after the next downturn. Will money flood back into tech? Will it "rotate into cyclicals" as people are saying (and have been saying for the last few weeks)? Will a rebound on the dollar or bond yields or the eventual return to positive federal interest rates cause a biblical outflow from equities?

Furthermore, when is the next big downturn? Is it heading into the election? The day after? Is there going to be a cataclysmic chain of loan defaults and bankruptcies like in the financial crisis?

People keep talking about the "recovery", but the elephant in the room is that everyone tacitly acknowledges this rebound feels like a practice run. Everybody keeps talking about the next crash like it's a foregone conclusion. People are following trends because it's better to do as the Romans do than to employ any critical analysis right now. If we do get another crash, it'll probably take longer and the recovery will be more protracted, and more conservative.

I'd rather just hold my MSFT/AAPL and wait for years. I can't predict anything, and impatience never does me any good. If both are lower in 1 or 2 years than they are now, at least I won't be the only one bagholding.

My comment applies to defense stocks in general as well, though.

You got me thinking, though... Oil is the clear play if the Middle East goes to war, but for SE Asia a key export is advanced process semiconductors and you can't mine those out of the ground... I could see a clownworld case where INTC goes back up not due to getting their shit together, but rather because of TSMC getting physically destroyed or blockaded by Chyna. It's a little too doomerish for me to bet on as an outcome, but of the SE Asia countries I do think Taiwan is the most risky.
