Highschool then first 2 years of uni + shittones of anime and self learning on the side. It helped having friends that were studying it seriously instead of just like for the purpose of watching anime. I made many Japanese friends over the years with limited English so it forced me to speak Japanese and in turn help them speak English.
Living there is a massive motivator as well you can't just English your way through things - it is a bit embarrassing but like you get over that quickly since if you want to eat you gotta be able to talk and read numbers.

HelloTalk can help for flirting and conversation but you will rarely improve from there. My current issue is I don't study anymore so I don't improve, at this rate I will need to go back and relearn some basic sentence patterns but I can still talk about politics and shit.
