I happen to know a little something about that. I trade mostly index futures so Nasdaq, S&P, Russell 2000, etc. You sign up with a broker (I use Amp Clearing since they have the lowest fees and lowest margin requirements). When you sign up, you have to tell them what feeds, platform, and data provider you want. I chose CME, Sierrachart, and CQG. There are a few options and you can change whenever you want. CME is important cuz that is where the index futures are traded.
Once you fund your account, download the Sierrachart software ,and login with the credentials Amp gives you, you're ready to trade. The advantage of futures is no wash trade rule, better tax treatment, essentially 24/5 trading, shorting as easily as going long, massive liquidity, and insane leverage.
That last part is the gap. Be sure you don't overleverage which is very easy to do (like 30x if you want). Keep from going to far and you can treat trading index futures like trading SPY except 23 hours a day. I hope that helps and if you have any more questions, respond.

Guys, I've been investing with my 401k (thankfully my benefits package allows me to contribute anything over 4% of my contributions into whatever stock I want if I don't like their retirement plan - which I've outperformed by leaps and bounds).

I opened up a roth IRA account too because of all the money I've been saving since Covid lockdowns. I have $10k in cash and I don't want the Fed to make that useless. I've got about $6k in PMs, $38k in my 401k, and $1k in my personal account because I've always been too scared to play with actual savings.

But I don't want my savings fucked by inflation. I also don't want to put all of my savings into a personal account, I want some of that to be converted into my Roth. Is it impossible to fund a Roth IRA with a checking account? Can I only contribute by transferring from my 401k? I don't see the option on Fidelity to transfer from bank to roth.

I give you the promise to deliver something on a certain date for a certain amount of money from you right now.
So for instance we are trading the S&P 500 and the current price of a single micro contract (which is the lowest amount you can trade) happens to be $16,450. If I short 1 contract and you happen to be the anon that buys that contract, I am committing to giving you 1 micro-contract's worth of the S&P 500 on September the 19th or thereabouts when the contract is settled and you give me the $16,450 now.
That's all there is to it. The only difference between selling/buying S&P contracts on the futures exchange rather than doing it with shares of SPY is the actually delivery takes place a few months down the road. Note that brokers like Amp give you margin so you don't actually have to have the $16,450 in your account. It works like how margin obviously works. If you have $8000 in your account and you buy one contract you are 2x leveraged so if the S&P goes down 50% you end up with a margin call. Depending on how much leverage you use is how far down the price can go. If you buy a contract and it goes up in value you can just sell it whenever you feel like to close out your obligation and take the gains

There are a lot of assumptions that go into the pricing of the futures contract but then again there are a lot that go into spot pricing of SPY we just don't think about it much since a lot of it involves market microstructure that aren't that easy to act on by retail traders like us. An easy way to visualize what matters is to look at a direct comparison between SPY and the e-mini S&P futures contract.
