The risk is minimal when you buy from mints or well-respected dealers. But you’re right that the risk is higher with bars than coins, which is why some individual collectors shun bars.

If you prefer coins that’s fine, but then you’d best buy your coins in bulk because you get better deals that way. They often come in tubes of 20.

I actually like American Silver Eagles, but because they’re a bit of a boomer meme or whatever they tend to carry a ridiculous premium, which is why (if you’re iffy about foreign coins due to potential lesser recognition) Maples are a great alternative, especially if they’re cheaper which they often are. Those promissory notes are supposed to be tied 1:1 with whatever commodity they are promising delivery of. Silver currently has 172 promissory note out for every 1ozt in existence, gold is 86:1.
