Going from poor to "Making it" wealthy is about talent and hardwork, but also a great deal of random chance. Your solid business could be one out of ten solid businesses that succeeds enormously instead of making only decent money or outright failing. Same with investing. If you had bought Microsoft in the 90s with a nest egg and waited 30 years you would have 200×ed your money, but you could also have only made 10% a year or even lost it all. You need to have most or all of the prerequisites for success and even then most people won't become extraordinarily wealthy.

I don't have any data to support this claim, but I figure the path to wealth for most people is entrepreneurship. You make money by having other people build wealth for you.
