Bitcoin is not a tangible asset. It's not associated or tied with anything in the real world. It only has value because people think it has value. Isn't that a definition of a speculative good?

Of course it's speculative, but looking back on the past two halving events it's not inherently wrong to think that we are going to moon again next year. Its just a very limited sample size.

It does not matter. There's too much money in the world and they're all trying to seek alpha such that trading a valueless token is not different than trading a stock that doesn't give any dividends.
If there's a way to make money on it, it will be traded.

With bitcoin you have to think further out too... like defi right now is a scam but both btc and eth are the cornerstone of it.
By scam I mean, Defi right now is just a way for crypto users to gain more leverage on their existing trades, but maybe it can be more than that in the future.
Even right now you can move your entire bank account on chain in the form of stablecoins if you want.
If you don't see how an alternative to the current financial system is useful then we just have to agree to disagree.

>> No.20785159

You're changing what OP said. He said it only has value because people think it has value. Your wording is vague and stupid because you replaced value with "things that are determined" ???

A tomato plant has value outside of speculation. It is able to feed people and grow more tomato. Its value is determined by its usefulness as a means of nutrition. Bitcoin has no value and its only true function is in facilitating illegal activities.

A lot of intentional stupidity in this thread. This is what I come here for.

You can walk down the street and buy gold without filling out a tax form and submitting an ID and social security number. Can you do that with BTC?
BTC relies completely on digital networks, gold does not. The point of gold is that it is physical, it is tangible, it has thousands of years of history of doing such.
>Does gold have real world use?
Yes, it has industrial use just like all precious metals.

I don't have an affinity for gold. I don't own any physical gold and I don't own any miners either. I think BTC is even dumber because it's incredibly cumbersome and inefficient. The value of BTC could drop 10 or 20% in the time it takes for me to purchase it and then actually use it for payment.
There's only two kinds of people who have BTC. People who buy illegal things online and people who hold it expecting someone else is going to pay more for it even though it does nothing aka bagholders.
>Imagine owning BTC when you could own TSLA and AMZN, get the same pump, and they actually have demand because they do something

It's related to the cost of mining it, which is tied to the cost of electricity.

If anyone could mine it for free, it would be worth $0.
