You grab a calculator for the third time that day, multiplying your gold and silver ounces by the price of each… the total staggers you all over again, even though you checked it just a few hours ago. Precious metals prices have been screaming higher for weeks now, jumping 5% to 10% every day, frequently higher. One day last week gold was up 20% and silver a whopping 36%, just like in 1979.

Meanwhile, the Dow and S&P have crashed. Real estate has frozen up. The bond market is a bloodbath. But gold and silver prices are soaring. Welcome to the wealth transfer.

The world is in a panic—the US dollar has crashed and the resulting inflation has spiraled out of control. Everyone around you is desperate to get their hands on any gold or silver they can. It’s morphed from greed to fear to survival. Investors scramble to buy bullion while it’s available, premiums be damned.

Prices march higher every hour. There’s no let up. Daily gains of 5% are viewed as small, but they make up for it the next day. Your portfolio swells bigger virtually every trading hour. Your life is changing right in front of you at breakneck speed.

You turn on the TV and every program is talking about the latest calamity in the markets or economy. Gold and silver updates, the only bright spot, are interjected every 10 minutes, more often than the OJ trial at its height. Breaking news is schizophrenic; it jumps back and forth between crisis updates and soaring prices in the precious metals markets. Breathless reporters strain to be heard above the noise on the trading floor, yelling about computers that can’t keep up and traders getting margin-called or becoming overnight millionaires. You’re glued to the screen and continually try to calculate your gains on the day—you can't help it.

It was all so exciting at first. Then it became breathtaking. Now it's scary. The world is falling apart around you, but you're drowning in obscene profits. You ponder selling, but the next day your portfolio screams higher and you feel overwhelmed once again.

You hear on the news that the local bullion shop had a break-in last night. They’ve since hired round-the-clock security guards. Premiums have gone through the roof, but lines still form every day. The dealer hands out claim stubs as customers arrive every morning: your number will be called when it's your turn... the wait will be long... please have your order ready... yesterday we ran out of stock by 10am.

And it's all happening because central bankers, in a desperate reaction to deflation, overshot and created too much currency. Inflation is now officially out of control and has scourged every part of life. You mock government officials that insisted this couldn't happen and curse those economists and TV pundits that claimed there was nothing to worry about. Their lies have been exposed for what they are: empty promises that had no basis in reality.

Cash has become a hot potato, and everyone rushes to spend it before it loses more purchasing power. It seems everyone is clamoring to get something tangible, but mostly gold and silver. Hyperinflation is knocking on the door and feels inevitable.

It’s got to the point where food prices change intraday, sometimes several times. The $100 your partner left with this morning to buy dinner isn’t enough. Stores and restaurants post prices on a chalkboard and update them throughout the day, always higher. You suddenly remember you forgot to fill up your gas tank on the way to work, and realize you’ll now pay more and be stuck in a long line. Your salary this month will be woefully inadequate to pay for basic necessities. The government is trying to work out an official “inflation adjustment.” Good luck with that, you mutter.

A local radio station interrupts to report that an emergency summit of all heads of state is being held. They're “working urgently” on the problem, but you and everyone else instinctively knows their solutions will fall short. Your gut tells you they don’t have the ability to solve the problems they themselves created.

Violence has quickly escalated, and rioting has become a near daily occurrence. The President called in the national guard, but you hear reports that politicians and other government officials are given first priority, above regular citizens. A major TV network runs a special report about the spike in arrests at the Canadian border… scores of US citizens have been caught trying to sneak bullion and stock certificates out of the country.

Everyone is infuriated at politicians, regardless of affiliation. A local government office was overrun by angry taxpayers and frantic benefit recipients whose checks can’t keep up with inflation. You hear another government office was set on fire. A riot erupted in the nation’s capital last week and martial law was temporarily declared. It's becoming increasingly dangerous to travel. You worry about the safety of your kids.

As chaotic as things are, however, it's hard not to be excited. You're in the middle of the wealth transfer, what is quickly turning into one of the biggest in history. Your life will change permanently—you’re part of the new rich. You could quit work, live off your investments. Your spouse is ecstatic, and your kids are in awe of your foresight… their friends and other family members are suffering, so they see firsthand how your preparation has shielded them from the turmoil.

You're so glad you bought gold and silver before the crises. Those worries about saving a few dollars on gold and a few cents on silver are petty and meaningless now. You’re so thankful you didn’t procrastinate.

You can’t help but daydream of what you might buy, where you might go. A vacation home is suddenly an option, maybe even two, as is worldwide travel. You ponder what you might invest in next, as virtually every other investment is now dirt cheap. You decide to give money to your church or charity. You make a note to schedule an appointment with the accountant. Better update the will with the attorney, too...

Actually there's a big difference. If the US dollar measured in foreign currency rises with the price of gold measured in the US dollar it means both the dollar and gold are rising together which means the dollar may not collapse.

But that isnt what is happening. The dollar is dropping while gold has just broken 1900 so people obviously no longer see the dollar as a safehaven and are moving into precious metals

I don't think the dollar will collapse. They will indeed inflate their way out of this. Unlike during the last crisis, I don't think they will be able to sweep the ill effects under the rug. We are going to feel inflation this time...there's no way around it. The Fed has abandoned their inflation target and will let the economy run hot to stave off deflation. All this stimulus and liquidity is going to inflate assets. We are going to go through difficult times, and gold/silver will indeed inflate, but I think you have time to keep stacking. You are just going to be paying more and more. I think sub $20 silver days are over.

Most nuggets over a gram have a (in normal times) a premium of %15. It can be more if the nugget is really unique and interesting, collectors love them. In this crazy ass world were in right now the premium on nuggets is almost %150, they are being bought out faster than guys like me can dig them up. I sell my nuggets to a set of buyers in Vancouver, Seattle and Victoria, I used to sell them online sometimes but Ebay is such a cesspool of fraud I gave up.

I spend over 3k on silver.

No not necessarily. Id check Google news quickly and use the ceo.ca search bar on the top right for their names. Bad news spreads quickly so if these guys scammed/screwed up then you should find it.
Some guys only work in juniors, which is great if they find deposits and sell then/develop them. I'd check the share price of companies they work at/have worked at.
Some mining executives are serially successful, others just pretend to do work for a big fat paycheck, these are called lifestyle companies.

Southern Empire Resources Corp own several major past producing mines in two well known gold / silver camps in California and Nevada. They are exploring these properties for new mining potential and to rework existing heap leach ore pads left from modern mining in the 1990s. They are buying the Sask gold explorer Mas to expand their exploration portfolio. A word of caution though, California is no friend to major or small scale mining, they have been slowly squeezing the industry with new environmental and social regulations that make constructing a modern mine very costly. Keep that in mind.

I really ponder with selling some 20oz gold. Maybe to buy some BRK and some V with it.
But the dollar seems in complete collapse right now and loses half a cent against the euro every single day. Stocks crab and I barely break even against the dollar decline by writing covered calls.

The only asset that actually increases, or at least keeps it value in euro, at the moment is gold.

I dont complain about getting richer, Im just a bit confused because for the first time since 2010 gold is actually doing something substantial .

You make an interesting point. Silver's optimal range seems very narrow... if there's a total collapse, apocalyptic scenario then you'd be better off prepping in kind, and alternately if we see a temporary economic crisis followed by a recovery gold would probably be a better store of value than silver I'd imagine?
So silver would just be for the event the dollar collapses but shit more or less holds together through it.

Depends. The general standard is that Silver is valued at a full day's pay for the average worker; whereas 1oz Gold is valued at a tailor-made suit. Now obviously price has fluctuated (notably with Silver suppression in the last 50-70 years) but most people here generally can agree that both Silver and Gold will at minimum triple in spot price once the spike occurs. Previous spikes have varied too, with most reaching x5 to x9 price
And then you've got however much on top you want to add for premiums (not just because you want to scalp more bennies; but also to make back the premium you lost, and how much local amounts will affect demand). Taking premiums into account you can hike as much as you can get away with, provided you have no moral compass
Finally, you've got the people here who are waiting on 'the great correction' in which Silver 'corrects' to what it should be valued at next to Gold based on supply. This is extraordinarily unlikely, but is a greater-than-theoretical possibility to throw it a proverbial bone. If Silver ever does correct; 'the Golden Bull Run' won't be just a hypephrase for cryptokiddies, it will be the literal phenomenon that affects all of PMs

One thing to keep in mind though, Mr.1 post from this ID - a full SHTF innawoods collapse is next to impossible. The economy will rot, wither and die over the course of years, if not decades. Though it's fun to plan for a scenario where you wake up, open the window curtains and there are savages fighting in the street fighting in the rubble of yesterday's civilisation; the reality is sadly much more mundane, as humans generally try to uphold societal standards. A good case study is the Bosnian (Serb stronk), Crimean or Ukrainian conflicts of the last few decades - even in full on warzones, once the shots died down for a few days; kids would go to school, women would get their hair done at a salon and men would go to work

tl;dr minimum x3, possibly x5-x9+ Note the ship is already sailing

Historically salt was so valuable because it was the best method of food preservation before refrigeration in areas without frost. You might expect to see refrigeration from generators or even iceboxes remain prevalent in a long term SHTF situation. I don't think salt would return to its historical value except possibly in places that are ice-free year-round. We have a greater understanding of insulation and lots of such material lying around that we could make more effective iceboxes than people did in the past.

People who think we will ever go back to bartering with food and lighters and shit is insane. The economy is far too complex for this coincidence of wants to ever occur. Yes many people will be impoverished and mortgages car loans will default and food will be more expensive but it will be a slow grind and the complexity will still be there and goods and services will only increase in complexity.

It won't be an apocalypse, all we need is to let all the people who can't pay their debts default, flush out all the overpriced over leveraged assets and reset everything on real values based on real needs.

Now consider that at current spot price, working 200 days a year for 1oz/day is equal to $4,540 per year. Working 50 weeks a year for 1oz/week would be about $1,135 per year.

I'm not saying that's where this shit is going, but it's an interesting perspective and piece of history, and noteworthy that there are still many countries around the world that would fall within 1oz = 1 day labour, and a few where 1oz = 1 week.
