I am stating this simply in order that nobody gives a stock recommendation and pretends to be myself after I leave today. As for who would care, presumably the many dozens of people who have stated that my advice convinced them to buy gold and mining stocks within the past few months, and saved them from financial destruction. Which you can verify simply by looking at this archived thread. https://i.warosu.org/biz/thread/19669109 I know that I have done good work here, so what you think of me is completely irrelevant.

Silver bull market is only just beginning, so it is never too late to buy miners. GDX/SIL, GDXJ/SILJ, are the safest way to do so; small-caps have more upside potential but also greater risk, so should only have 1-3% of one's net-worth apiece. Five best small-caps which I know right now are Newrange Gold, Euro Sun Mining, McEwen Mining, Fireweed Zinc, and Wallbridge Mining. But they are long-term value-holds, so don't expect them to go up right away. Five best silver small-caps are Discovery Metals, Callinex Mines, Silver One, Dolly Varden Silver, Great Panther Mining.

>That’s a clue to its [the gold standard's] unrecognized fragility — it worked until suddenly it didn’t anymore.

>If the economy of one country ebbed relative to another, preserving the gold standard meant that someone else would have to sacrifice — typically laborers, who would be thrown out of work or subjected to wage cuts.

>“Far from being synonymous with stability,” UC Berkeley economist Barry Eichengreen wrote in his 1992 book “Golden Fetters,” “the gold standard itself was the principal threat to financial stability and economic prosperity between the wars.”

Incredibly retarded comment, couldn't be more off the mark.

The entire point of Winter is Coming is that it's a simple metaphor that the extreme hardships are coming, not that the literal season Winter itself is coming. While Westeros was experiencing it's longest Summer in history, everyone got drunk, feasted, fucked and ate all their food and fought pointless and endless wars wasting all their output not understanding that the longest Summer could mean the longest Winter. And when Winter finally came with it's famines and undead armies, Westeros was literally bankrupt and up to their eyeballs in debts, starved of resources and manpower. All realms and houses drop one by one. The only thing that may eventually save them is Daenerys, also called "The Silver Queen..."

>Sounds familiar...

While we experienced the longest economic expansion in history, with the greatest gains in the Dow and S&P, Schiff has been warning us of our insane levels of debt in government, households, and of functionally bankrupt zombie companies. While the times were good, we cut taxes and let the corporations buyback their shares, effectively wasting their debt instead of strengthening their balance sheets and creating war chests. We refused to raise interest rates from the rock bottom while we still could, suffering a little pain so that when the eventual recession came, and like Winter it always does, we would have more ammunition to fight against the deflation boogeyman, leaving a buffer between us and the extreme pain. And now that the recession is here, we're already at the 0 bound with nowhere to cut but negative. Companies are dropping dead one by one and will continue to, then quite likely the currencies will drop one by one, breaking their pegs and going to 0 until the Dollar itself breaks, and the US defaults. The only thing that may save us is a hard reset, and a return to hard money. Gold. Silver.

Doesn't matter though
Gold's value for thousands of years before it had any industrial applications was determined by the fact that it was shiny and yellow and people liked it
There are metals far more rare then gold and yet useless and ugly so no one cares to acquire it

And what's to stop them from just making up whatever numbers they want to to say how much gold is stored away in the country

Plus they'll probably limit how much we can own privately like they did in the past or just confiscate it. This is far more likely to happen under the gold standard then under fiat

Personally I'm happier If normies just keep using fake paper currency and I have gold and silver. I don't want people's money to actually be worth gold

Its value as money wasn't just rarity, zoomer. Gold and silver amalgams called electrum were the first money because they were obviously different from the rocks around them, due to the fact that they're so unreactive. Gold and silver were easily identified and refined by people with simple metal working knowledge. The same thing would have happened with platinum if the best old world deposits weren't at the bottom of Africa. Money isn't just rare, or shiny, it needs to be fungible (readily divisible), difficult to fake, and long lasting.

Raw wheat flour is useful, but it spoils rapidly making it poor money. Wampum may be rareish owing to it being manufactured by hand, but its supply is only limited by man hours worked. You can trade in beautiful coats, but they aren't fungible because no one wants 1/5 of a coat in change. Dried beans make for poor money because they're so common, you'd need armfuls to purchase anything. The value of gold (and other PM) comes from its ability to uniquely combine these qualities.

Also, rearly man didn't know that Iridium, Osmium, or Rhodium existed, and even if they did, they couldn't refine them. When we talk about rare earths, we don't just mean that there are comparatively few atoms of that metal, but that they tend to be extremely diffuse in the distribution, the same way that there is 6kg of gold in a cubic km of seawater. In order to make something money, you have to be able to actually get it. Gold and silver became money because people knew that you couldn't just make more by blinking and wishing it so; that the value of their work was securely stored.

>> No.20607401

>>20607097
There's a document on YouTube. This is a good starting point from it:

But what was it about gold and silver which led to those two elements becoming money? Well, to answer that question all we need is a periodic table and a big red marker pen. First of all, we can remove all the gases. Obviously we can't use things like hydrogen or argon as money. Next we can remove elements such as calcium and sodium which dissolve in water and also anything that reacts with air, Whether it corrodes or burst into flames neither of which is a suitable thing to keep in your pocket. This removes 56 elements. Then of course we need to eliminate anything radioactive because... well quite simply you don't want your money to kill you. And perhaps surprisingly this disqualifies 45 elements. Now that leaves us with just five so-called precious metals - gold, silver, rhodium, platinum and palladium.

Neither rhodium nor palladium were discovered until the 18th century, so that rules them out as early money. And the problem with platinum is its melting point of around 3000 degrees Celsius which was far out of reach of mankind's earliest furnaces. All that leaves us is gold and silver and it was these two. Precious metals which mankind adopted as both stores of value and mediums of exchange.

It doesn't mean that they didn't choose it because it was shiny and attractive

I'll disagree on paper - can't be stored, I might agree on nickel. The value of money is immeasurable. Gold and silver have first mover advantage. Nickel's properties, pricing, and scarcity aren't as well known and make it harder to adopt as money. You're picking at straws.

I see you ignored the post the blew you the fuck out.

Paper (I assume you mean a fiat, or literally printer paper with the word money written on it in crayon) does not last very long. Even the cotton fiber notes the US has or the polymer notes the EU rolled out degrade much more quickly than even worthless copper-nickle coins used today. This is somewhat alieviated by them being physical tokens of digital bank numbers. You didn't prove that scarcity doesn't make something valuable; you only proved that scarcity ALONE isn't what makes something valuable. The other components of what makes good money were already described several times here.

Gem stones are poor money because they are not fungible and interchangeable. Some gems are naturally more beautiful than others. You can't easily make 1/2 gem and 1/4 gem denominations where each unit is equivalent in value. You'd have to get each piece of your money appraised in value by an outside party, which is precisely what good money (gold and silver) avoid. In the old standard, once a merchant was sure you weren't passing counterfeits and he'd seen a certain coin before, you could spend your silver pound internationally with little oversight. Because all the value assignment had been done by the mints making the coins virtually interchangeable.

No shit, the 'shiny' attracted their eyes. But what kept them attracted was that the shiny miraculously never dimmed, because of the unique chemistry of those metals, making them unique amount anything else in the natural environment. Had There are 4 metals that have that property (and the other properties of good money). 2 of them they couldn't mine and refine sufficiently, and 2 of them naturally appeared in accessible deposits. I don't know why you can't get that there are multiple factors that go into being good money.

Idk why you're all arguing with me on such a basic concept
Value of ALL money is only based on perception
Gold TODAY regardless of the historical logistics of it lending itself to money conveniently, is only based on our agreement that its worth what it is

It's logical to assume that currency will continue to evolve far into the future. Maybe we'll find some extremely rare new material that revolutionizes energy production for space faring humans and we'll decide to make a completely digital currency based on the value of this new material/element

Or maybe currency will remain fiat for all eternity because it suits our interests the best. Just remember that all of that is just a derivative of the bartering system

I suspect that for most people here, however, that they'll not make enough money to pay that kind of rate.

Im starting to think that all the qualities of gold, not being able to tarnish primarily, are all afterthoughts
No one put thought and planning into why gold or silver would be money
It just started in one country (because it was shiny) then everyone else started copying them because it seemed like the best idea at the time

The primary factors that got gold to become money was because of aesthetics and scarcity, not all the other stuff you mentioned
And there are other materials that could have been used
You can't expect me to believe that gold is the only conceivable material that could have possibly become humanity's money of choice

honestly it was because this little city state in modern Turkey found electrum nuggets in their river that were super easy to make coins out of. It was the perfect blend of silver / gold to make durable currency out of that still looked like gold, and yep basically everyone in the ancient western world went "hay thats a good idea". Notice though that coinage didnt take off in a lot of other places until later when trade became greater meaning basic bartering couldnt be used for larger sales. After the Romans left Britain for example, people basically forgot about coinage as a trading tool.

It is known that cultures have used giant stones, cowry shells, beads, etc. as money. There are probably countless items that were used as money. However, history has forgotten about them because they were an inferior money. They were not fungible, they were not truly rare, but most importantly, they were not very durable. Silver and particularly gold endure. Another interesting feature of gold is that it is relatively useless which makes it ideal to serve as money.

Electrum money started in what is now Turkey, and the funny part is they understood its value so well, that only a century after it appeared, we have samples indicating they were already debasing electrum coins with copper to make their mint supply go further. And this actually led a loss of trust in that coinage, and a reduction in people trust in its value. We see the same thing constantly through history. The Athenians debased their coinage to effectively mint free money to pay for civic construction (and ate shit economically for it later). The Romans went from an almost pure silver denarius to a coin plated in silver, and with the decline in good money, came a loss of economic activity that we can measure based on shipwreck numbers. We have had cycles of sound money, and debasement or fiat, ever since sound money was conceived of. And every time people have to pick up the pieces, they independently make their way back to gold and silver, despite being millennia removed from the first guy to be shocked by it. You are not the first person to have your dumb ass idea.

If everything except 'OH PRITTY ROCKZ' was an afterthought, people would also regularly trade in mirrors, glass beads, and rock candy. In fact, that worked on the Indians, but only on first contact; even they got wise that shiny isn't money in and of itself.

And I don't need you to like the fact that gold and silver fit the criteria for good money the best of anything we have on earth. Had earth not formed with any of the 4 PMs, they next best thing would end up being rarish, bright oxides, ground into powder and traded by weight. And on that bizarro-world earth, you might actually be able to understand this post.

It's because someone decided it was a good idea and the thought spread to everyone else when they saw it and because the countries that adapted gold as a currency were powerful wealthy and influential

No. Read my last statement. Gold is useless for most things. Things such as copper, iron, and steel were harder and more useful. To use those substances as money would have taken prevented more useful things from being made: weapons, cups and plates, chariots, fasteners, etc.

Gold's much greater scarcity is also highly important once you get trade between civilizations. In a microcosm, sure, sand could be used as money if the culture was in an area where sand was rare.

The Meso Americans barely had the metallurgical knowledge to process copper, and their extraction of gold and silver was limited to pulling pure nuggets from the surface of the ground. Bronze 'axe money' was something the Aztec picked up from their western conquests. They were still primarily running on barter when the Spaniards got there, because their civilization was moving in slow motion compared to the old world.

By the time of Spanish contact with the Inca (who had actually developed gold working and bronze smelting) they still weren't using it for money, and didn't seem that keen even making bronze tools, preferring to use cheaper stone tools like they always had. You need an economy that trades over distance, with other peoples, in a way that barter becomes inefficient to begin to need money. We can see them experimenting with early money, but their progress gets interrupted by the conquistadors before they can end up making the same choice as the old world. Its like being surprised that a 2 year old doesn't know that a gold bar is more valuable than his favorite toy.

But why don't you share that stack?
