The "sound test" is your best bet for checking whether or not it's actually silver. There are apps you can download that will listen to the sound made when you tap the coin and tell you whether or not it's genuine. This test is not 100% as what it does is compare the sound of the coin you struck to the acoustic profile of a genuine coin they recorded, but it's still better than nothing.

Would anyone even notice you paying for something with a note or coin from 1980? 1960? 1940?

Realistically I doubt it. There are a few people like Floor Stacker who've clearly been stacking for a long time or particularly diligently who will become wealthy overnight if PMs gain even modestly.

From what I've seen though, I and a very large proportion of people here are in the 50oz to 200oz range, which means that (barring an absolutely apocalyptic collapse of the economy and a spike up to $1,000/oz or more) most of us will get a tidy windfall but likely not become instant kangz.

i would say it's rare to see a banknote much older than 10 years. higher denominations that are handled less may last longer, but then again, higher denominations have more security features, and they actively weed out the less secure notes. coins have much longer lifespans, although it's very rare to see old coins, due to silver dimes/quarters being phased out in 1965, and copper pennies being phased out in 1982.

BTW, we also have to keep in mind that mooning in dollar terms in the case of PMs likely means a currency collapse. Sure, in the event of something like that happening, holders of PMs would be wealthy in relative terms compared to most people (and since most people would be impoverished, they would give you massive economic leverage), but at the same time, most of that gain would be well, literally just on paper and reflect mainly the WEAKNESS of the fiat currency, and only secondarily the strength of the commodity.

So sure in the event of a monetary crisis, you might be able to rip off a house for sale with a few ounces of gold, especially if the real estate market collapses. BUT most goods would only be somewhat cheaper for you. The dollar losing 50% or even 75%+ of its value doesn't make every commodity collapse with it. Things like food, energy etc. will still have value, and that means that even if people are happy to give them to you for a fair exchange of PMs, they're not going to just give everything away for nothing.

I remember reading that before decimalization in the 1970s, British coins and notes essentially circulated indefinitely, I suppose until they became far too worn out.

You'd had exactly the same denominations since the early 1800s, so the odd Victorian or even Georgian shilling or sixpence in your change wasn't really a problem.

Decimalization meant that suddenly some coins and notes that had been in circulation for as much as a hundred years or more mostly pulled out, since converting between the two systems wasn't that easy. Although the shilling was used as a 5 pence for about a decade afterwards (bit of a rip, since the old shilling had much more buying power than the new 5 pence).

From my admittedly short experience:

- buy bars over coins for weight when stacking silver, more bang for your buck
- DON'T spend too much money on commemoratives/antiques: if you have an interest, compartmentalize it. Maybe limit yourself to one coin once a month or something.
- don't buy fractional gold, it's too expensive for what you get
- build up a cash reserve while you stack: you don't want to get caught out, have to sell in a hurry, and end up actually LOSING money
- don't be seduced by deals on eBay that are too good to be true, stick mostly to trusted dealers and mints, although eBay is neat for buying the odd cheap coin, I like getting 64 Kennedies and old shillings there (but be careful, and don't get greedy and end up buying a pile of fake bars or coins from shysters)

How do you define indigenous? The whites in South Africa are the group of people living in SA that whose lineage stretches back the farthest. The few native South Africans were genocided by the invading Bantu centuries ago. Thus, the closest to an indigenous population existing today that SA has are the whites who can trace their lineage back to the Dutch settlers.

Should add to this that, if you want to buy a good mining stock which is having a pullback right now, Wallbridge Mining and Euro Sun Mining are the best choices I know. Both Eric Sprott investments with enormous potential. Wallbridge in particular is only up 2% today, and still 30% away from its peak. You have to make sure it's sterling silver (.925) for it to be worth it. You'll need a few things:

>Lots of distilled water
>Lots of nitric acid (the more concentrated the better)
>Copper wire
>A graphite block
>a furnace to melt in

The following link is to a three-part series in which the dude goes through step-by-step the refining of sterling into .9999 fine. He also goes into the waste copper recovery if you're interested. It's pretty simple, but time consuming and expensive if you don't know how to make/have a cheap source of nitric acid. It's three hours long, but you can skip through a lot of it as he doesn't edit.
