dividend money will end up as cash in the brokerage account unless you tell them to automatically reinvest that cash back into the stock it came from. A lot of brokers wave any fees for doing this and buying more shares with that cash. if the stock price is $100, and the yield is 5% once a year, the dividend will be $5 and the price of the stock will go down to $95 to pay you. now you have 1 share worth $95 and also $5 in cash. hopefully the stock is in an upward trend and recovers from that 5% dip.
