To really understand staking you have to appreciate the occult nature of the chainlink project. We all love Sergey, but unfortunately he is just the huggable public front of a much darker and more sinister project, run by the puppetmaster Ari Juels. I'll spare you a lot of mumbo jumbo about worshipping numbers and alignment of the planets. But fundamentally these guys made a ritual pact with some very powerful bankers in order to get their project adopted, which requires a sacrifice of the innocent. A sell-your-soul kind of deal. The banker elites have now done their part, and the team must begin covertly acquiring and "staking" numerous children in order to pay the price in blood.

"staking" is effectively a node operators collateral.

You pay to get data from a node operator to create and utilize smart contracts. if a Chainlink node-operator fucks up the contract because of bad data, and causes you losses, depending on the contract, you get LINK to pay back those losses, so now its on the node operators books, and not contract users/creators.

if you provide good data, and has enough collateral to convince smart contract creators you can cover their losses, you will hopefully get a steady revenue of LINK due to their patronage.
