If you look at how the collapse occurs its always debasement and default (argentina style). Grinding poverty is the outcome BUT the conditions that destroy the financial system are not present usually. The only people who would absolutely benefit with physical PM's is the very rich (Paul leroux style) but even then the number of situations when physical gold is more useful than some small amount of physical gold and a shitload of BTC/monero is very small. Its hard to escape or conceal gold. Its easy(ish) to memorize a BTC wallet.

Yes.
Coins, rounds, bars all are considered taxable by the IRS. Doesn't matter if ASE, has face value etc.

- tax calculated when you SELL (not when you buy, or when prices rise), but not due until when you pay yearly taxes
- taxed at UP TO a max rate of 28%
- rate can be lower depending on length of time held, other income, tax bracket, other capital losses, deductions etc (most of us will owe 0%, but consult CPA if you're worrried about it)
- they can't tax what they don't know about (in Minecraft). Face to face barter and trade/cash is nice (in Minecraft). Whether or not a dealer reports a sale depends on many factors, see links below
- this is for federal CGT only, individual states may have different state taxes
- this applies to Americans only. Bongs euros etc can avoid taxes by buying certain coins

Its hard to recommend crypto when theres 3000+ shitcoins floating around. At some point it will consolidate and if you didnt choose the right ones youll be left holding the bag. As long as the internet exists there will likely always be a niche for crypto but that doesnt make it risk free or investment grade. Metal is for sure a safer bet.

I"m bullish gold. BTC is if you need to flee a country and as some sort of yolo lottery ticket for a transition to a new world reserve currency. Paying for physical gold you get screwed by dealers. I personally don't think physical PM's will be needed and like the liquidity of GLD and AGQ for metal exposure. I listed my mining holds earlier (although they are due for a correction). If you want to avoid paying the collectibles rate, the best thing to do is to own precious metals in a tax-advantaged account (401K, IRA, Roth IRA, Roth 401K, etc.) You can buy things like PHYS, GLD, CEF, and other such securities that are shares in a trust of bullion. Yes, you are taking some counterparty risk with those things but for most people, that really is the easiest way to own precious metals.

There is also a way to directly own bullion in a tax advantaged account but you have to go through a custodian service and they charge fees that may not be worth your while.

>Coins, rounds, bars all are considered taxable by the IRS. Doesn't matter if ASE, has face value etc.

As far as best form for price over spot-
It varies. Usually you can get a better price the larger the bar, but often there's little or no price difference from 1oz rounds if you shop around. Then there's a possible trade off against decreased liquidity, and you might lose any savings you made when buying. Arguments can be made for and against the importance of liquidity:
- why would you sell? Hold until moon, collapse, hyperinflation, GSR correction, change in wealth cycles etc
- no point in stacking if I can't use it when I need to, and conveniently
- liquidity problems are a myth, LCS dealers minters etc will still want my 1,000,000oz bar
- etc etc, there's good points on both sides

...and of course, bigger bars take up less space in the safe/pirate chest/hole in the ground (pic related).

TL;DR
It's a highly individual choice. When in doubt, shop around and get 1oz coins/rounds for the best price. Analyze your stacking priorities and adjust accordingly.

I know, the way it's worded is confusing. Up until a month or so ago, I assumed it was a flat 28% rate too. However, the IRS site says
>There are a few other exceptions where capital gains may be taxed at rates greater than 20%:
>may be
and it also says
>Net short-term capital gains are subject to taxation as ordinary income at graduated tax rates

The Ellsworth CPA site is more specific:
>The 28 percent capital gain tax on collectibles is the maximum tax rate. For example, if you are in the 15 percent income tax range, your collectible gain is taxed at that rate. If your income tax bracket is higher than 28 percent, the collectibles tax rate is capped at 28 percent

From what I and other anons have found, 28% is the max rate. It is balanced against other income which determines your overall tax bracket, how long you've held, if you paid for delivery, appraisal, cleaning, storage etc, other capital losses, deductions, and other factors.
Most will pay a lower rate than 28%. If you're selling thousands of ounces in a way that puts you in the 28% category, then chances are your regular tax bracket is in the 32%-37% range and the 28% max rate would work in your favor.

This is all getting TL;DR though. IF you plan to sell, IF it will be reported, IF you can't show a capital loss, IF you held for more than a year, IF you can' find the answer in the instructions for schedule 'D' and the tax tables, then consult a CPA.
I definitely wouldn't encourage any anon to avoid taxes by splitting it up into small transactions face-to-face and not reporting it. That would be illegal. In Minecraft.

It seems highly unlikely that the USD will be replaced by a RMB that is backed by Chinese promises (snicker). The USD system as it currently exists--a purely fiat global reserve currency--has no precedent in recorded history. If there is going to be a continuation of such a system, free from the barbarous relic of the gold standard, it will probably something akin to Keynes' Bancor system. It almost certainly will not be based on the RMB which is managed by a country that practically no country on earth trusts.

i've held it since 2009, and continually added shares here and there over the years; sitting on 4700 shares at an average price of $2.61. so it has done very well, actually better than any of my majors (although entry points have varied a lot of the last decade for different companies), but i can't really speak to what makes them a better or worse play than other miners. yamana is usually my most volatile miner, both on up and down days, which could work to their favor in an extended bull market.

personally, i wouldn't bother shifting a few hundred bucks around to buy a different miner. what you want to do is accumulate a larger stake in a variety of miners, and get them to the point where they're all long term gains, so that if we do reach a mania, you can diversify out of some positions with the lowest possible tax burden.

I'm not sure what documentation would be acceptable to the IRS, you'd probably want to consult a CPA on that. Off the top of my head, possible options:
- IRA
- keep your receipt, if you bought from dealer/LCS etc
- if you inherited, there should be a record
- maybe take pics and leave EXIF intact?

Like I said though, I have no idea. Consult a CPA if you think you'll owe taxes.
This is so strange, usually anons want to hide their stacks, and avoid paper trails lol
Good job though, wouldn't want to do anything illegal like split it up into small transactions and not report it, in Minecraft.

Seems to say the same as discussed in links previously posted. I would caution anons against assuming all dealers/sellers will do the same though. Schiff seems to avoid reporting unless they have to, but I have read other sites that say they will report in certain situations where Schiff won't. For example, purchases over $10,000 using a cashier's check. Schiff says non-reportable, but other sites may report.

Some anons don't want their purchases reported either. I just wanted to caution anons that while Schiff seems to avoid reporting unless they have to, some dealers may report even when they don't have to. As mentioned in an earlier discussion, some of these things are required by law, some are agreements and guidelines. Some dealers report more than required, probably to cover their ass just in case.

Basically if it seems like the reason you spread out paper cash transactions over 10k was to avoid doing 10k, they are legally obligated to report it.

The COMEX is where the actual physical trades take place, and this month already about 70 million ounces have traded hands. The reason that physical silver has to be delivered each month is complicated and has to do with how the futures market is set up, and then subsequently manipulated to create enormous profits by said big banks. They make billions of dollars off of these trades. Now, most of the time these delivery contracts don't actually result in physical silver trading hands, and everybody involved instead just walks away with obscene amounts of money.
Now, there aren't many open contracts in August, because it's not a delivery month. But September is. And the open contracts in September are enormous. Something like 600 million ounces are up for delivery that month. And nobody, not even JPMorgan, has that much physical metal on hand. With the price kept as low as it's been for as long as it's been kept down, what do you think is going to happen when the largest holder of silver in america discovers that it doesn't have anywhere near enough metal to keep up with demand?

Very interesting, thanks for the QRD anon. Do you have any research sources or websites to track this schedule of physical deliveries for futures contracts?

Yeah a while ago an anon that was in the soviet union (I think Yugoslavia) during the collapse posted some advice. He said that cigarettes, lighters and batteries are worth holding along with water and canned food. Apparently the situation was so bad that the army soldiers were eating canned dog food.

Wait people are stacking PM without a food and water stockpile? I was talking about full on homesteading to ride out a long-term shit show.

Noob stacker here, curious why I can't find the mint marker on these Ike coins.
It should be right under the neck, or at least it is on my other ones.

These days it's only worth it if you want to barter with boomers who have been hooked for years. Alcohol is a good option. Here in Australia a lot of people were going to liquor stores during the first carona wave (it was considered an essential service here).

Well, there's the fact that silver is historically undervalued to gold. The ratio is currently sitting around 97:1. Historically speaking, that ratio tends to hover somewhere between 25:1 and 12:1 globally. Which means that it's crazy undervalued. So, with economic woes on the way, what goes up immediately? Gold. Both metals should in theory dip before heading up, but considering that literally everything but metal is leveraged and overvalued in the name of turning a quick buck, I don't think either of them will. So, gold starts going up immediately. Silver goes up, but slowly. That's what we're seeing now.
But, by the middle of August, when the butcher's bill starts coming due to all those summer businesses that are stranded due to covid, a lot of those investors with open silver contracts start getting nervous. Trump can't fix the economy because he's just not smart enough. Biden won't fix it because he's an evil pedophile in bed with the big banks. Maybe they really should take those delivery contracts and hold the physical stuff if the markets don't return to status quo. Fun's over, time to hunker down and hope they have enough bullets to survive the coming collapse....
