>All it takes is dead nigger to collapse on the football field or for Trump to not be out in public for a week to get the stock market the jitters ;).
Fuck, you're right on this one. Imagine some nigger collapsing inside an Amazon warehouse from respiratory problems (induced by COVID-19), but he had to hide that fact and come to work otherwise he would be unable to pay rent and get evicted, or worse - lower his credit score more.

And then to top things off, because of how chaotic the Amazon warehouse is, he dies before he even gets to the hospital. It makes the national news. Protests everywhere, Amazon warehouses burned down by nigger arsons, bombings, riots calling for Jeff Bezos to step down from his CEO spot.. Amazon stock plummets to $1000 as all the soi Amazon consumers cry "tyranny! BLM!" - and the market takes a steep dive along with it as Trump disappears for a week due to safety concerns before the elections amid death threats coming his way.

Welcome to October 2020.

Ok, here's how I explain it.
The market is supposed to be based on earnings. The only reason stocks are a thing is because you can pay $100 now to get back more than $100 over a long time via dividends. It is a way of turning a lump sum into a cash stream. This is an attractive proposition for the wealthy, and so the stock market exists.
Because the future dividend return of a stock is not written in stone, there will be a certain amount of speculation on just how valuable a particular dividend income stream will be over a given period of time. As the price fluctuates during price discovery, there is room to make money on the volatility.
Almost everyone on this forum focuses on making money on the volatility rather than trying to convert their wealth into income streams. That is, they gamble on trying to understand price discovery better than the big players. Because this is all people care about here, it builds up the impression that it's all the market is. But that's not the market. The market is very wealthy investors trading positions in income streams, and dividends and earnings matter. What /smg/ sees as the market is the turbulence that follows around the big players' moves, but those real moves are based on fundamentals.
So unemployment matters, because it affects earnings. Ruined consumer spending confidence matters, because it affects earnings. The virus matters, because it affects unemployment and consumer confidence, which affects earnings.
When the fundamentals are bad enough, stocks no longer have a value as reliable income streams that you can trade your lump cash for, which means they no longer have a value to big investors. That's when they fall, but that fall is usually accompanied by a "dead cat bounce" which is a technical construction during a fall that lets the elite scoop up all the money from people who gamble on volatility. That's where we are now.
Don't kid yourself, the market is 60% overbought.

Yes, there's also the promise of future dividends.
Are you under the impression that "growth stocks" are about something else than growing to a new level where they again feel comfortable with raising dividends? The speculation on a growth stock is that it will some time in the future start paying out such great dividends that it will become very attractive to the real, wealthy investors which is why you'll be able to sell your bags to them at a good price.
Without dividends, there is no stock market. Without owning a share of the earnings, why would anyone ultimately want to hold a stock in your world?
Don't tell me, your entire theory of investing can be summed up with "greater fool".

>Id rather they outpace gdp growth than pay dividends

Yes, I know that you rather would. Reread my first post. You are trading on the turbulence of players who care about dividends. The reason some stock prices will go up so much is that real investors speculate that the company will become successful enough to eventually start paying good dividends. That's what a "growth stock" is, a company that is taking a pause on the dividends to use the money to expand their business with a view to eventually being able to pay even better dividends.
It is scary that nobody here knows even the basics of how and why a stock market works. But that's because you focus so much on the price action that you start thinking it is the reason for the stock market existing. It's not. Dividends are, and the sooner you understand this fundamental truth the sooner you all will stop making fools of yourselves. You don't even get that when you speculate on price action, what you are really speculating on are the long term prospects of turning the company into a viable income stream for wealthy people via dividends.

>Dividends are an admission of nothing to spend money on and too stupid to buyback instead.
You are still thinking from the perspective of a growth stock. If your company has announced it considers itself a growth stock, which means a company that thinks it can expand business aggressively (implying there will eventually be a nice dividend) then you are right, paying out dividends instead during such a phase would be admission they failed at using the money to expand like they set out to do.
But a company that announced they intended to be a growth stock for ever and never pay dividends would not get any investors (well, ok, they'd probably get lots of robinhood and biz gamblers throwing money after them, if this thread is any indication) because they would have just declared that they never intend to make holding the stock a winning proposition except for the prospect of unloading on a greater fool, which is not a serious theory even if it's the only theory /smg/ runs on.
Come on, /smg/, the challenge is on: explain to me why anyone would ever want to buy a stock that had declared it would never pay dividends, without invoking greater fool theory.

I must correct you on one point.

It's not dividend itself that matter, it's profit. If the company takes the profit and invests in itself, the stock will raise accordingly, the dividends are discounted from the valuation of the stock. You'd have your return by just selling the stock anyways. In the long the growth of a company follows its capacity to increase profit, that's it, take any established company, plot the graph for profit, plot the graph for stock price, if the company is old enough they have about the same shape.

Yes, because you estimate that this will lead to greater growth of the stock price, which is the right approach when investing in a growth stock.

Look, people here see a company that pays dividends but doesn't grow as a useless stock for retired people. And that is correct, from your perspective, because you are on the hunt from growth stock.

The mistake all my detractors here make is to not understand that being a stable divided company is not where companies go to die, it's where they go when they have made it. That's the kind of company big investors like. It's not the kind of company a small investor hoping to get rich will like. But, and this is the central point I'm trying to make here, without the prospect of some day turning into a stable, dividend company, the price of growth stocks would not go up.

Your whole growth stock casino relies entirely on the prospect of those stocks eventually becoming non-growth stocks. At that point you will have exited, but that's when big players hold. Without this, there would be no logical conclusion to a stock rally, it would be built entirely on greater fool theory, i.e. thin air.

And that's why I come dragging with this shit. Fundamentals impact negatively the long term probability of growth companies turning into dividend companies, and that will in turn depress speculation, whether you like it or not.

Alright fellows.. The reason people invest for dividends is cash flow. The replacement and/or improvement of monthly, quarterly, annual cash in hand. It's income. That is all. The retired can live off it, or the young can compound it into larger and larger payouts via reinvestment, or annualized dividend growth. in 20 years, a 3% dividend can compound into +50% yield on cost.

Yes, but ask yourself why anyone would want to hold a stock for a long time if the company made great profits but didn't want to share them with the share holders? How does it help the share holder if the company is making profits? Only if he can sell them for a higher price, right? Why would anyone want to buy them at a higher price? Because they can sell them for an even greater price...but where does that recursion end? If the company will never share its profits, what could possibly be the value for the guy who buys at the top?

When the time comes for the guy who buys the most expensive bag, he will either have made a good buy because by now the company shares its profit, or he will be a sorry bag holder.

/smg/ seems to think that it is inevitable that the guy who buys on top will be a sad bag holder. But that's what betrays a very shallow understanding of the system. If there were consistently the case, there wouldn't be any stock market, not only would nobody who understands finance want to participate, it would probably be illegal.

The reason the whole thing works is based on the idea that the guy who buys on top does so for a rational reason, converting his bag of money into an income stream. If that mechanism stops working, the whole market falls.

Next Thursday after another jobs report. Covid is slowing down when adjusted to tests. At least until 2 days ago. Today was pretty bad I think. But if it shows down and another good jobs report comes out, I expect a nice really next week. Even the technicals in the financials industrials and energy are getting too depressed

I have not. a. single. fucking. time. recommended anyone here to buy a dividend stock.

1) The reason a growth stock grows is expectations on future dividends (not that you will collect, but the people you sell your stocks to)
2) Fundamentals, including assets, will have an impact on the dividend paying capability in the future
3) Therefor, fundamentals expected to have an impact on future ability to pay dividends will have an impact on growth stock price action today.

So yes you are right, but you are right because of dividends in the way I have explained.

Technically only supply and demand. Same as food. But there is more to food than its price obviously. Same here.

You get a Share of that company. You own a part of it.
You get voting rights, youre share is backed by 1/100000th of the company itself. When that companies value increases your value increases. You get to decide what course that company takes in the future.

And more importantly, other companies need to pay you money if they want to get involved in that company as well. Deutsche Bank wants to decide how AAPL works? They need to buy your share.
And this all mixed with the expectation of how it will be in the future.

This is very simplified, but its 3:40am here.
Read Graham or Buffett. Their explanations are quite good usually.

Oh. And dividends. Though many companies pay none or so little it hardly matters. Like BRK.
They also add value to a stock.

Someone saying that the value of a company is based on future dividends is retarded. Same as a person who says its all just "How much the company is worth"
Like someone argueing that the market is gambling.

Let me add to this that a high stock price affects the underlying assets, Soros on Amazon bigger price means easier raising of capital and other stuff:

>The high stock price has allowed the company to receive cheaper financing costs. And attract exceptional talent which in turn has lead to increased growth And hide costs by including stock options as a large portion of employee compensation And be unconcerned with profits, enabling them to drastically undercut competition and steal market share

I think a lot more people would accept your point if you said returns instead of dividends.
Eventually, all stocks will reach a point like you say where it becomes a raw future return calculation, but most people disagree with you because dividends aren't the only way companies give returns nowadays. Buybacks are extremely popular and appreciate the value of investors' holdings too. It's harder to fathom how buybacks can be seen as a direct return, but if you knew that a company would spend 20B a year on buybacks, it'd be similar to spending 20B on dividends in that all that value gets passed on to the investor.

Is this really the level everyone who fails to understand my very simple message operates on?
BRK is a holding company. They can infinitely jump between growth stocks, just like you lot. That invalidates nothing I have said. Ask Buffet and he will tell you the reason it is possible for an investor such as you or him to keep jumping between growth stocks is that those growth stocks eventually turn into dividend stocks, which is the exit time for him and you.

It's so fucking simple. Don't invest in dividend stocks, but also don't fool yourself that fundamentals don't matter for growth stocks via their impact on future dividends, for the reasons I have outlined.

You're forgetting an important factor - the owner of the majority of the common stock OWNS the company. This is obviously irrelevant to the retail investor, but it puts a floor on the price even if the company never pays dividends. If the value of the company ever fell too far below its book value, there would be an arbitrage opportunity for a wealthy investor to basically get free money by buying out the company & selling all its assets. Furthermore, even if they didn't firesale the company, they could still get a good income stream WITHOUT dividends by paying themselves from the company's income stream (they're the boss now, they can do that). Dividends won't sway the opinion of your hypothetical rich guy if that money would have been going into his pocket either way.

With regards to the big blue chip stocks. You people have to remember your audience.

Look at the people who rode workhorse from $5 to $20 and sold. I bet the vast majority that did that here invested less than $500. So you got really lucky and 4x your money to $2000. The odds of you doing it again are remote. It isn't going to happen.

Now look at my situation. I have $50,000 invested in bank stocks. My goal is they recover 30% and I make around 15k. I'm just not going to risk 50k on a stock like horsey. So invest your paltry sum on those things. Me I'd rather buy options on blue chips if I want to be risky.

WKHS may get manipulated by kikes, but it will not dump. It will recover. NIO, however, will collapse... and all the shills will instantly evaporate and you’ll never hear about it again.

Remember BLNK? Remember SOLO? Seems kinda similar to this NIO posting, huh?

WFC hit almost rock bottom today.. If that don't scream "Buy me!" I don't know what does. So they cut the yield in half, big deal. Your still getting 4% a year at rock bottom prices. That's more than most banks fork out still.

sort of this is only if your losses are more than your gains, thats where the 3k come into play, IE if you gain 100k then reinvest 50k and lose it you pay taxes on 50k Gaines not the 100k, if you lose more than you gain in a year you can only use the capital loss for up to 3k, how do you not know this and function

I know it's not sustainable, but if all my cash was tied up on stuff like SPY or growth stocks I wouldn't be able to make plays on stuff like WKHS.

As far as my portfolio goes it's 40% TQQQ long holding, 30% speculative stock money, and 30% AMZN (mainly because I get RSUs from Amazon). Yeah I know it's not balanced but it's done way better than 10%/year boomer SPY shit for me so..

Total folio is maybe $350k across RH and TD

That’s great that you made money gambling on meme PnDs. Not the point. People aren’t saying “Dude check out NIO it’s pumping, but dont hold too long because the hype is artificial and it will dump tomorrow”. They’re acting like it’s the next Tesla.

original anon who promised not to call you a cuck here, there's more than dividends though, companies are also taken private and you can be bought out for a nice sum of money because someone really wants to own that company, and of course you could be one of those few groups of people collecting ownership through shares with the aim of owning it yourself.

I had other things to say, I'll be back later tonight, but your point about fundamentals isn't lost on me. Though I question anyone who tries to quantify how over/under valued the market is at any given time. Especially when they do so as if it’s a matter of fact.
