Most people avoid even small amounts of extra responsibility, and the elections for the president of a fairly large club rarely have more than 2-3 entrants. I joined this club and ran for a board position unopposed just because no one wanted to do it. Then the 2nd year I moved to board position with more responsibility and my 3rd year I was running the show. I set it up to be president for someone I thought would do a good job, like all she had to do was apply and I would have selected her. Instead she said she was worried she couldn't handle the extra responsibility and the role of president went to someone who's only been in the club for one year.

99% of people in student clubs don't want to do shit and just showing up to every event and asking the guys in charge if there's anyway you can help them out is enough to let them out you in a position with more responsibility if you want it. And there's many many engineering clubs at a university you don't even need to just try for one. Even if it's a small bull shit club you are signaling to employers that you're willing to do more than the bare minimum and often times that's good enough for them to give you an internship/job

Aside from very few exceptions, there's a good reason why some genres are underserved: they just don't fucking sell. Sounds like your mind is already set though (at least it's good to have that kind of determination).
