coinbase isn't really a wallet from my understanding. There are cold wallets and hot wallets. Hot wallets can be hacked (like coinbase) and are typically apps on your phone where youre supposed to store minimal amounts of coins. Cold wallets are basically fancy USB drives. A good cold wallet is a Trezor. bread wallet. Mycelium. Jaxx are other hot wallets that I have been recommended although I cant attest to them personally. I am new to this... just started Tuesday in fact. But I am a quick study and it sounds like you need to do your own homework and stop copying other peoples answers. Also a word of caution....there was a scam I heard about where people are putting fake wallets on the google and apple stores. So look at the reviews and make sure there are a lot of them. People buy it thinking it will go up and then more people buy it so it actually goes up. Some people will think it will go up a shitload in the future and will buy more and more. If it goes down because someone wants out, sometimes people panic sell, but others only will try to buy the dip, this creates support so it won't go back to 10$ in a short time or anything.

There's no company attached to it, so it can't go out of business, in a way it's less risky than investing in shares of a company.

Can someone with cold wallet help, hypothetically if you have an Ethereum on a connected computer that is just a watching account, and then a real wallet on another computer that stays offline, then that is a cold storage setup at that point?
There is no actual "bitcoins" stored on the offline device, but according to the blockchain they would be there upon synching, which you don't do.
So is that the proper way to be storing coins or is it good intuition that the coins should actually be on the offline computer?

Back to your initial question, in most cases it just makes sense to convert a currency to bitcoins and then to usd. You're not losing too much in fees if the liquidity is high.

Is it easy to trade crypto even if you're a complete novice trader? I'm considering trading between BTC and ETH, and have noticed that both follow a particular pattern - they tend to go up by a lot, and then back down by about half or a quarter of their increase (thus increasing steadily, which is what they've both been doing for years and look set to continue to do for the timebeing). Could I just keep trading whichever one is going 'up' for whichever is going 'down' without exposing myself to too much risk? And if both are going up, just holding?
