The moment I buy horse -

My stomach will drop as I enter in my buy order. Thousands of dollars. Money I could use to travel the world, experience great things. But, this is for a greater cause. Don't you want to multiply your capital time after time within weeks? Just this one time - it'll bring you so much closer to buying land. You're close enough already, but this will definitely hasten the process.

I'll press buy, enter my PIN, and confirm the order. Then, it will trigger. I'll watch the 1m chart all day. By EOD, it'll have dipped by 3.2%. This is nothing on the mind of someone who bought just 3 days ago, but for me it's hundreds of dollars. I won't sleep, I'll be up all night reading press releases from horse, going through Pence's twitter feed. Then, it'll open again. Down 3%. Almost nothing in the greater view or Horse, but for me, it's too much. I sell within 10 minutes. It only makes sense from my perspective - such a pump, it's only asking for a dump. It's too unstable. But just like that, just like when I bought it, it'll trigger again. By EOD, Horse is up 7%. Then 10%. 8%. 15%. 13%. I'm left behind.

Sorry, I meant as in, "a long way to go down." I think I'm agreeing with you.

Most of the stock-gamblers I know have all the worst instincts: extremely driven to buy by hype and FOMO, then unwilling to admit defeat and eat a loss until the pain becomes unbearable (or they need to sell to free up cash for the next FOMO.)

So until I hear people saying "you know, I just can't do this anymore, my wife's bitching about all the money I lost, I'm going to sit out for a while," we haven't got the bottom yet.

It depends on your reason for adding more money, what you're adding money to specifically, how much you're adding and why you're adding that amount, are you adding money you will need soon, what your overall strategy is (especially with regards to how you sell or hedge), etc. I have positions I add to as they're going down because for them to go to zero would mean total collapse of the global economy. I'm cool with that. I never add a lot at any one point. I don't need the money in the foreseeable future. I'm not adding because I'm in a panic. It's legitimately part of my strategy for getting up to the size I like to get to. And so on.

99% of the time, people are adding to losing positions for all the wrong reasons and they're setting themselves up for a lot of pain. I had a friend at the gym that was adding to a losing biotech I had never fucking heard of. To be honest, now that I think about it, I had a coworker at a very big mutual fund who was doing the same shit (averaging down on some penny stock medical company). That's a recipe for pain. If your losing position is like 10 shares of SPY and your maximum position size is 500 shares and you have no problem holding for a while and maybe you even have some hedging techniques up your sleeve, adding on the way down isn't the worst thing you could do.

tl:dr is you're probably not averaging down for the right reason.
