Economically, is a PhD worth doing when you can get a higher paying job with a masters?

It depends what you want. I'm too far in to leave now, and I kinda want to finish my PhD just so I can say to myself I did it.

Only a very small subset of genius-level math/compsci/physics people really strongly benefit from doing a PhD, and they're the type of person for whom it is nearly effortless. Think the guy who churns out results and papers while still having 5 hobbies and a freelance programming business.
They waltz through the phd program and onto various prestigious academic roles with a high degree of independence, and/or into very highly paid industry jobs. If you don't think you're like this, a PhD probably isnt a good option for you
