I just graduated with my EE degree and work for an MEP consulting firm in SoCal. My boss started as an electrician and then eventually went back to school for his EE degree and got his PE. Dude bills $273.50 an hour for the company now as a senior electrical engineer for his consulting. I'd consider just getting an EE degree at cal state Long Beach or something like that if you already have your associates like you say. I'm starting at 34 an hour equivalent right out of school.

Boomers run every industry, you gotta do the hard yards first so you learn the fundamentals (this goes for anything) and then you can find a suitable role once you develop from those fundamental skills. I started out as a construction sparky and now i work PLC maintenance in an oil and gas project getting paid 230k annually in aussie dollars working a 2 week on and 2 week off roster, I might get one fault a week which usually is just a simple reset. Mostly i just play vidya games on my laptop in my little hidey office and once a week i have to have a walk around and "find" faults that can be fixed in the next shutdown (preventative maintenance). I started an apprenticeship when i was 18 finished at 22 and now im 28 for reference.
