19918562 No.19918562 [Reply] [Original]

https://www.ampleforth.org/

It is synthetic commodity with elastic supply. The price is stable and the market cap fluctuates based on demand. People always complain that too much of ethereum projects are trying to imitate real world finance, and not creating new innovations that eth allows. This is in that category.

They are about to get a lot of buzz because they are catching on to the liquidity mining fad. You can earn ampl by depositing ampl/eth uniswap tokens in the ampleforth geyser. Marketcap is 8.5 mil so still early days.

What's funny is this coin is built for /biz/. Since it's elastic supply is based off demand, shilling translates to a price increase more than any other coin.

Yes. But only BNT and AMPL are designed for it since the birth.
Bancor have 100+ employees, all working for 3 years+ trying to solve liquidity issues.
Ampleforth tokenomics is perfect for liquidity mining.
I'm shilling BNT on /biz/ since 3k, print this, AMPL is next.

Just sold my 20k or so ampl on uniswap, I have to say this uniswap stuff is pretty nifty and I was probably only able to sell thanks to all the liquidity there due to the incentive program, while the bitfinex orderbook is razor thin. Held for a couple months but glad I could get out at breakeven desu.
I used to think there was maybe a nice niche in the ecosystem for ampl and the idea seemed cool but going over everything again I don't think there's a real point to ever using ampl.
Their whitepaper is nice and clear, but the red book is a bunch of hot air. I've come to understand all their claims rest on the idea that people will ever use 1 ampl as a unit of transaction without looking at the supply/rebases. This is just not realistic since doing so would mean letting yourself get fucked over purposely. E.g. for a short-term arbitrage opportunity they claim there is a window right after the rebase where you can sell your extra rebased tokens for the old, unrebased price. Why would anyone fall for that? It makes no sense.
If anyone can give a legitimate usecase I'll be interested to hear it.

its not fully meant to be a stablecoin.
think of it more as a traders coin.
the first goal is to be used as an alternative form of collateral within defi. Something that doesnt track and follow and dump correlated to bitcoin but has its own strong economic rules.
At low volume and liquidity it will be FAR from stable. But that's when its most opportunistic for traders and as a trader coin.
Now they are aiming for more liquidity and the tools and dexes and defi mentality is here in the market now to make this happen.
At a higher liquidity then it can be MORE stable, much more infact. Think $200mil market cap then it moves slower, dumps and rises less and can then be useful as a collateral coin and alternative instrument for decentralised finance .. for now, take a slice and enjoy the ride up getting there!

iirc their rebase arbitrage example uses Uniswap. The liquidity pool is taking the hit and they don't have a choice in the matter unless they unstake every day during the rebase period.

Yeah, they say there is arbitrage between uniswap and bitfinex: with the rebase, the size of the uniswap ampl pool is changed (just like any ampl holder), which will immediately affect the uniswap exchange rate. So in that sense the uniswap price is always the "fair" price reflecting the rebase immediately. The arbitrage then depends on a "slow" trader on bitfinex not updating their orders with a new asking price. Which would just be stupid of them, a guaranteed losing play, so that's what I don't see happening in the long run.

I agree with you anon. Spent a good chunk yesterday researching AMPL, and although it's a cool project I'm not completely convinced yet. Bought 500 AMPL to chuck in the Geyser to see what comes of it but I'm failing to see actual use cases as of now. I still feel like this will pump purely on the DeFi hype alone though, and the fact that the team consists of Americans with good credentials at least eliminates the exit-scam risk.

However, the way I see it, it's not just fast traders profiting off of slow traders by selling the rebase. If the marketcap of AMPL increases and you never sell the rebase, wouldn't your total ownership of the supply increase % wise? That's the whole point right, making it attractive for liquidity providers to participate in the ecosystem?
