debt is meaningless if the loaner can't collect because I have guns. Imagine going to a loan shark, taking as much as possible at whatever insane interest rate they want and investing it in tougher and better trained enforcers than he has. Technically I'm still in debt to him just like technically he's still man even though his cock and balls have been rammed down his throat.

The problem is that unlike Japan, which has a healthy high-tech industry, the only use-case for the USD is to buy US government debt and US stocks. Japanese yen can be used to buy both consumer goods and high-tech components, US dollars mayby you can buy basedbeans and corn, US doesn't really export manufactured goods.
If faith in US debt degrades, that is a huge amount of dollars which people will want to convert to their native currencies instead. If the same happens for US stocks, that is even more destructive to the value of the US dollar.

Probably earlier, we are already at 130% gdp to debt. A 200% debt to income is a death signal. That depends on what government and Fed does now and during the demographic collapse.
