If you only had one firearm in a particular caliber, I think 9mm would be the most widely used therefore the smartest choice but like another anon said, you're going to probably die if you're trying to pick up scraps in the street in a SHTF scenario so memes aside, you'd do well to have plenty of ammo

Most police departments use 9mm for their sidearms. It's also the most well rounded and commonly available pistol round. You do have .22lr which a single well placed shot can solve a lot of problems.

Most people have the AR platform which uses 5.56 (or .308 or .300 blackout but those are niche) so ammo can be readily available to loot or trade. And don't forget about shotguns. 12g and 20g are some popular models.

I told myself I wouldn't buy generic rounds anymore but the Asahi rounds at JM are aesthetic as fuck. They're actually more attractive to me than any of the sovereign silver coins are. And they're actually cheaper than most 10oz bars right now.

There was some good discussion on inflation a few threads back and I have a question for the anons educated on the matter. Does buying a house and financing as much as possible right now make sense? Hypothetically since assets rise in “price” during inflation, the house should maintain its value while the value of the debt decreases, right? Making it really easy to pay off? Or would houses simply drop in value for some supply/demand reason? It’s hard to make heads or tails since the fed is manipulating so many markets.

Also, general stacker question, is it better to stack gold eagles or Buffalo? I’ve heard overseas markets like pure gold better.

So if you finance a house 95%, and paying off debt is trivial, you get a free house essentially. I think this is an oversimplification. I don’t know if we will hit hyper inflation levels, but expect high inflation. Of course, another consideration is that leverage usually dries up in down swings.

People's incomes are getting fucked, that much is certain.

What is uncertain is what the fed response will be. Dropping interest rates and helicopter money have been enough to keep the real estate market propped up so far. If corona mortgage payment extensions keep getting tacked on, there will not be a major RE dip. OTOH they can always pull the rug at any moment.

Houses are still in a massive bubble. Just as great a bubble as they were in 2008, if not more so. On average, they are 8x earnings. The current prices only subsist because of the availability of easy credit. If you want to know why you should buy gold instead of a house right now, watch this video; bearing in mind that, at present, gold is still historically vastly undervalued. (It would need to be $5000 in today's money to reach its nominal peak of $1900.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-knwwD-PZc

If you buy a house now, one of two things is going to happen:

1) If and when the U. S. government defaults on its debt, and interest-rates spike, both house prices and stocks will collapse by up to 90% in nominal terms. This is unlikely.

2) If and when the U. S. highly inflates the currency, which will happen before 2021, in order to prevent a stock market crash, house prices will soar in nominal terms. But, against the price of gold, which people will flock to as a safe haven, they will crash. A person who buys gold now will be able to buy three times as many houses in future as he can right now. Inevitably, by about 2024, the U. S. will reach hyperinflation, which will lead to a default, and then house prices will crash by 90% anyway.

Thanks anon. I wanted to double check my understanding. Of course it’s already been proven that the fed will do anything to kick the can down the road. I plan to stack gold, but if I can leverage a house with very minimal cash down payment, then it could be beneficial. inflation seems imminent and your scenario 2 is what I expect. I don’t believe the us will default on debt if they hyperinflate though, they should just be able to pay it in inflated dollars.

The other scenario could be that they will crash the market, increase interest rates, and rebuild. But, they could also be a military aspect that would be hard to predict too. Renting of course will have its own issues as rent increases a lot every year due to inflation. A locked in payment seems better, just the risk of the fed doing some bullshit Is annoying.

I just listened to an interview which Alasdair Macleod, the chief economist for GoldMoney, did today, and he actually addresses your question.

Timestamp 42:33 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9xeSOdr9Uc

He speaks about a character called Hugo Stinnes, known as "the inflation king," who did exactly what you suggest with respect to leverage, in order to buy up a quarter of the industry in Germany. But of course, that was when hyperinflation was already taking hold. It might be dangerous to play the inflation game when you don't know the exact date when at least high inflation is going to come. I project early 2021, but I might be wrong.

Macleod also says that, historically, gold has always vastly outperformed real estate during times of hyperinflation. In Weimar Germany, there was a time where you could buy a mansion for a really small quantity of gold.

I know i ve seen that colored mineral before and its name is on the tip of my tongue but i cant quite remember what it is. Quartz in general is a host for a lot of gold mineralization, as its the substrate that brings gold up from deep underground. In this case I am thinking that no, its not associated with gold in this case. The bluish / green coloration in my hard rock photos comes from minerals like malachite and azurite, copper ores. It also can come a number of other minerals such as fluorite and also some silver ores. Very nice looking samples either way, I am always on the look out for big quartz when I am working.

Question for /pmg/:

It seems to me generally accepted that gold is inversely correlated with the stock market / financials. Stocks go down, gold goes up, vice versa.

What about a portfolio where you are 50/50 in GLD/SPY, and you rebalance it perodically to maintain 50/50. This would mean you'd automagically be selling GLD when high and buying SPY when low, and selling SPY when high and buying GLD when low.

It doesn't get to the level of holding physical metal for problems like complete societal collapse, but as long as the financial markets continue to 'mostly work' it should function.

Thoughts?

I ve spoken about how I got into this feild before in other threads, but basically I ve been doing this since I was a kid, working around family friends who were miners / exploration geos. My family were all fishing / hunting guides so I learned bushcraft from that, I learned prospecting from my father and family friends who had me doing bitch work on small projects like core cutting, general labor all the way through highschool. I went and did 2 years of University to try and get a degree in Geology that way but I found it not to my liking and ended up getting most of my formal education through apprenticing under geologists and prospectors instead. I have done many things in my life, pack guide, prospector for hire, underground miner, diamond driller. I am a Jack of all trades type guy.

Stocks and gold won't be inversely correlated for long. That's a short-term phenomenon. The Fed isn't providing enough liquidity to prop the stock market up. When the Fed is forced to announce YCC and start flooding the system with money again, stocks will go up, but metals and miners will absolutely soar.

Thanks for responding. Sounds like a tough but really rewarding road. I've just found myself infatuated with the mining space after I acquired my first precious metals. The weight and the shine of gold and silver in your hands is unlike any feeling.

I'm a tradesman in my day to day, but I'm still relatively young at 24 and have a 2 year general degree that I can go back to complete. I've been thinking real hard about getting a bachelor's in geology then start writing to all the mining companies in Vancouver (I live in BC) for work. I don't mind hard and physical work, I sweat and bleed often enough. I'm also bookish at the same time and don't mind reading and studying or looking at maps. I just want a career in a place that lines up with my interests, so long as I can make a living.

That’s interesting. It is very hard to predict what will happen since the government will do anything they can to prevent the market from being free.

Current thinking is....inflation, home prices go up, then fed intervenes, markets crash, a lot of debt is wiped out in mass bankruptcy, rates rise, home prices stabilize much lower than they are now.

To make this work, you’d have to buy before the crash and quickly pay it off with inflated currency. Later, price of the house would be much lower, but it would be paid off. This is better than buying a house later at a lower price, but much higher rate. I think. Not really completely sure.

try and get on with one of the juniors, they are the best foot in the door. If you can manage to deal with your coworkers. The drilling companies are also a good way to get started in the industry, but its a lot harder work than being an assistant to a geo or core cutter.
I swear this generation of geos are useless. Last time I went to Roundup two years ago in Vancouver I couldnt hold a conversation with any of the geos at the different company booths, the kids just dont know what their talking about. The university courses right now focus too much on the books and not enough about the actual physical on the ground geology and its really hurting the industries their students end up in.

simple, do lots of outdoor stuff. A lot of the more recent grads seem terrified of actually being in the bush away from the rest of the world. Get used to not having internet 24/7. Get fit, get used to bugs. Also firearms training comes in handy. PAL holders get hired more easily because they can be usually trusted with things like bear defense in camp. Last year I worked with a group of guys fresh out of VIU's geology department and they wouldnt shut up about the bugs, about having bugs in their coffee. Another handy ticket to have is first aid level 3, its an in demand ticket that every camp job seems to need now because of helicopter mishaps.

Holy moly, that escalated quickly.
There's all different kinds of stackers. I always liked that different folks in /pmg/ were into different things but we all (generally) get along, brought together by the affinity for shiny rocks.
Some prefer gummint coins.
Some prefer artsy/niche coins.
Some are just trying to stack as much weight as possible for the cheapest price.
Some are mining it directly.
Some are financing the mining.
Most have their own personal balance of two or three of the above.
Myself, I'm on a budget, so I'm balancing most bang for my buck against future desireability/ease of into liquidity if necessary. I'd like tonever sell and leave it to my kids/nieces/nephews etc, but in case of economic duress or SHTF then blah blah blah, we all know the arguments.
At the same time I have love for my numismatic/nichecoin bros. I love some nice art on a coin/bar. If I was rich, I'd definitely buy more beautiful/expensive metal, because A) I'm never selling anyway B) Rare has appeal C) Beauty has appeal and D) I like what I like so fuck off.
Since I'm not rich YET, that would limit my ability to stack effectively on a limited timescale, so I don't at this time.
I called this thread "Favorite Designs Edition" and posted a bunch of coins I like but haven't bought because I can't justify the price until my stack and finances are on another level. I was hoping other PMfrens would do the same, not insult eachother like monkeys for liking different things.

TL;DR
Can't we all just get along?
Stack by weight? Cool.
Stack to time the market/play ratios? Cool.
Stack to withdraw from a corrupt system? Cool.
Stack by country/collection/series? Cool.
Stack for beauty/rarity/personal choice? Cool.

Just POST PICS and/or share info. Thank you.

I think a lot of the best relics lie underwater. Buried under silt after floods and rising sea levels. Sea levels were much lower in antiquity than they are today. Hopefully they will find more stuff in our lifetimes.

Quality posting
It'll be interesting to see what increasing technology uncovers.
Unless you believe that the elites have been plundering and hoarding ancient gold for awhile now, in which case... man I'd love to check out the vaults.

so did you read it or psychically intuit that I was bitching?
Also thats why I added a tl;dr at the bottom.
Also also usually I don't do that but I thought I'd jump in since my post started the shitflinging.
Thank you for posting pics, adding to the quality of the thread.

I do not have the exact number, someone here likely has it, but I believe at least half of the worlds mined gold is unaccounted for, likely lost below the seas from ancient trading or piracy. Hundreds of tonnes from the Spanish conquest never made it to Spain, imagine all the treasure laying in the dark, waiting for someone to hold it once more.
>>19837751
Thank you, I strive to post interesting stuff for you all.
>>19837782 If the rumors are true than at least they are safe hidden in some vault and not melted down for bullion. I know there is a massive trade in stolen artifact gold from Syria and Afghanistan going on. I even read about a group of tourists who were caught plundering Moche tombs in Peru for gold beads and other trinkets. That sickens me, because half the value of that kind of gold is the history behind it.

Are 2020 ASE's going to fetch a nice premium in the future? Because 2020 is now a notable year due to virus, but also mints and mines are largely closed or at reduced capacity so not many 2020 coins were made.

Seriously though that's what gets me, how much knowledge about our own history has been lost? Hopefully there are secret records being preserved somewhere.

>>19837994
I'm wondering about that too.
I don't think that there are going to be fewer 2020s minted than other years (I could be wrong, if someone knows numbers pls post), but it is the last year of the design. I was thinking about picking up a few for that reason.
The new design could be better, could be worse, we'll see.
If they put chips in 'em then fuck that I'll only buy old ASEs, and I know I'm not the only one so that could boost demand.

There are stories about the golden manuscripts that were saved by Monks from the smelter during the destruction of the Aztec empire, similar stories persist from the chronicles of the Inca empires destruction. Apparently though most of those artifacts were claimed by the sea or were lost later after being added to private nobility collections in Europe. Who knows whats out there just forgotten about.

fuck i am terrible tonight, heres a link to a neat doc from Time Team back in 08 about stolen ancient treasure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaG8GFdCROk This shit happens all the time and never really makes the news unless someone fucks up the false documents like what happened here.

Hmm. I'm skeptical, they seem to be into ancient knowledge, being gatekeepers etc.
Low key want to join the loominurti for access to the knowledge, but can't condone kiddie diddling or eternal damnation so that's a no-go...

Oh shit bros Egypt is talking war on Libya. Is this it? The spark that sets the world ablaze? With oil prices at historic lows and volatility, will Russia decide to sell it's crude to China at firesale prices? China might finally decide to get uppity and start really pushing the South China Sea issue? Ukraine has been hot for about 5 years now. Russian weasel planes have been caught in US airspace twice in the last two weeks. That carrier that China had under production vanished under cloud cover from American intel sats. Trump is visibly deteriorating on television. The US elections loom. Africa is under attack by locusts. The Middle East just lost it's main export as a reliable source of money. Is it time?
