My honest opinion: We need better PR out of this. The first spontaneous image with the sympathetic gaben guy and the qt3.1415 grill was WAY more valuable than the relatively costly moolah follow up.

Homeless people didn't want their images taken, that is understandable. But unless you can think of another way to carry the emotional message to the audience (hard-warming article is good but it's better if there is at least one nice picture to go with it) it won't do much. I also do realize that unpolished picture of a homeless shelter (especially with bad lightning) are hard to pull off.

I guess all I'm saying is that the pictures could have been better and I don't really know how to fix it.
