why was government debt such a big deal in politics before but now no one cares?

Government debt has rarely been a big deal in politics. Those of us who care are looked at like we're insane.

A decade+ ago it was talked about a lot. Bush used to be constantly blamed for it. Obama too early on but then people just stopped talking about it.

Ross Perot brought attention to it in the 90's so people paid attention for a little while, but they have the attention span of goldfish.

Because politics is show business for ugly people, and TV news is a shiny set of keys to jingle in front of American's so they don't notice everyone in congress pulling allnighters just to fuck them over a little harder.

Government debt, and the debt ceiling, don't matter when the currency they're denominated in can be magiced into existence by the force of will of the fed and the treasury. All of our cash (fed reserve notes) is loaned to us by the fed and is accruing interest so that loan cannot possibly be paid back. Its not intended to be paid back, even though the interest payment just keeps getting higher.

TPTB know this, but occasionally use it to get votes by blaming the system on someone who wasn't even a twinkle in his dad's sack when it was implemented. The good news is that we may get to see a monetary reset of the US in our lifetimes, which would forcibly unfuck this situation. The bad news is that would be pretty fucking horrific for the clueless normies who aren't ready to get out of the USD. I honestly think both parties in the US aren't talking about it because they know we're on the downswing and want to get all their money squared away before they drop the bags on us.
