He failed to take into account that the Fed, Treasury, Congress, et al bought the market an unknown amount of time on life support with the ultra easy money policies. At some point in the future, a few weeks or months, those policies will either have to be escalated further or the drop will continue. The Fed has said that negative rates aren't going to be a thing, but they've gone back on their word in the past. However, the market has priced in negative rates already, which means that if the Fed stands firm then a resumption of the crash is guaranteed.

What your friend went to school for 10 years to learn is that trying to time the market is insanely risky. Some people walk away 10X and some people walk away bankrupt. However, if you play the fundamentals, you will not lose money. You might not ever get a flashy stomp of a year, but you will retire comfortably.
