What's the difference between investing and gambling? Can you say a skilled poker player is also investing?

Is the poker player using his money to purchase assets that he thinks will appreciate in value? No? Then he's not investing, he's working.

So let's say in a casino there's a machine that sells tokens. You purchase your choice of token type to play. Each type token has a set chance of going up or down in value after certain amount of time has passed

According to your definition that's investing because you are purchasing something because you think it will increase in value

I think it’s a fair analogy. Provide a better one if you can.

Trading is a game of chance in which skill plays a role.

except if you lose at poker you lose your money, if you are wrong with day trading you just have to hold until you win

Investing has a statistical edge. It’s why the casino isn’t gambling with you, you gamble with them.

Do you pay fees to your broker to buy and sell?

>> No.19398990

Yes but the problem is that poker players frequently find themselves on tables with equal footing. You will not be profitable unless you’re playing at a table where no more than 1 or 2 are as good as you. It’s hierarchical.

Poker is investing in a microcosm though. You want to encourage people to pay into pots that generate large returns for you personally.

investing is a long term process, based on actually discernible values that calculate out to a profit. Long term information based process of increasing a securities value.

Trading is short term, swing trades or day trading, based on trends and speculation. The goal is to make wealth by the measures in between probable value in few details and estimated value based on other few details (usually price and volume).

The diffrence is in strategy and understanding of the security and process of trading securities in the market, over a lifetime, while the other is more of a job, where you're making money but not retirement (unless you invest it like an investor).

Investing is knowing where your dumping your money.

Gambling is when you dump your money in Link without knowing what link is or does.

With day trading, you trade the kind of stocks that'll lose you everything when they lose. You can't just HODL that shit. If you can make actual money selling and buying within minutes. You either have $300,000+ or are trading highly volatile companies. Day tarding is high stakes trading, which is practically well informed gambling.

John L. Kelly Jr. famously said that the difference between gambling and investing is that when investing you have a positive expected return.

A skilled card counter has a positive expected return, and therefore it's not gambling.

I don’t think people understand that poker is person vs person, not person vs house, and therefore has high EV upside if you’re actually good. There are no pro blackjack, craps, baccarat, or roulette players in Vegas, but there are hundreds of pro poker players.

Sports gambling would be a better analogy but yeah, if you're staking money on things happening in the future for potential financial gain you're gambling, so therefore investing is a subset of gambling.

gambling - highly volatile play where you hope you actually have some sort of advantage to make a gain. ex: playing options instead of using them to hedge, swing trading, earnings trades

investment - safe purchase that you will hold as it slowly appreciates in value, effectively making the extra money you have now more valuable in the future. ex: land, ETFs, bonds, precious meal.

is this good enough for idiots
