Any competent real estate guru should know this. My rent is less than 50 percent of what a mortgage goes for. Its still high but jobs pay so much that it offsets everything. Rentals in the city frequently fall under whats called rent control. The rent can only be raised a certain amount every year. Water and garbage are free for me. Electricity is dirt cheap because the city buys it at a huge discount from the power company in bulk then in turn charges residents at that rate...Something like $20-$30 month. In California Prop 13 keeps costs low to property owners who bought from a long long time ago. So rental properties can make a profit with relatively low rents. Read that last sentence again. And again this is California i dont know or care how it works in shithole flyover land

youll have to put in 20 percent downpayment that $150k unless you want to pay mandatory mortgage insurance $$$
after everything is said and done you're looking around $4000 a month just to pay the bank only

So in this particular situation I'm gonna come out way ahead renting.

But generally a purchase gets you better off. But it's case by case.
