I called the old landlord back and he was very apologetic about his son's behavior. He told me to only communicate with him from now on. He agreed to have a written confirmation for returning the deposit on the day of departure for me tomorrow.

You could just say something like "bad karma tends to come to people who don't treat others fairly" and on the last day if there's no deposit you just pour concrete down the plumbing and fly home.

Alternatively if you intend to stay or come back to the US and/or you're worried about legal recourse, you can run a bunch of cold water through the plumbing to cool off the pipes, get a bunch of high melting point fat like beef tallow, heat it to barely liquid, and dump it down the drain. It will solidify in the pipes and it won't be fixable just by running hot water and soap through the pipes. He also won't be able to collect insurance on food clogging the pipes and the city might even demand he pay to get their ends of the plumbing fixed.
