Being self aware is the hardest part. I was like this when I was 19. Smoked weed everyday and was a general fuckhead. I finally quit weed and started pumping 6 hours a day into art while working full time. Stop telling yourself you cant do things, that you lack drive etc etc. Your mind is an insanely powerful placebo tool and the thoughts you fill it with will make things you think a reality. The first step towards all growth is learning to control yourself.

This whole faggy 10k hours to mastery idea was from a meme book called Outliers, and it's just arbitrary horse shit that's contradicted by reality every day. You can become very good at something you're cognitively/genetically predisposed to being good at in a fraction of that time, and you'll generally get better at ANY cognitive skill faster if you have a high IQ. So find what you're good at and do that, and stop falling for low effort self help memes.

Start now. Imagine having no skill at 35.

Go to libgen and type in what your interested in.
Spend half your time studying and half your time practicing.

When you've read enough books you'll need journal articles. Get a subscription to the library of a university in your city then use google scholar to search instead of libgen.

An alternative to the 10000 hour idea is that reading 50 books on a topic is equivalent to a PhD.

This, the 10k hours thing is a mental trap. It focuses on sports and music because unironically they are a lot like video games, they don't rely on lateral knowledge. When you read history, you get better at literature, when you read literature you get better at philosophy, when you read philosophy you get better at science etc. Instead of fixating on narrow skills focus on developing yourself as a whole and then speccing into charisma then talk your way into a career that involves decision making since decision making is a highly lateralised skill. I spent the last 10 years making a shit ton of bad choices but they all conveyed so much experience that I can routinely talk to people my senior both career wise and age wise and run circles around them.

It’s like an S curve really. If you can put in like 100 hours you can fake most things to look like a pro to most people. And 1000 hours you might be able to compete. It matters more how dedicated each practice session is. The people who put in 10000 hours mostly did it for fun, and so not all of those hours were intense practice sessions with the purpose of getting gud

I'm 18 and heading off to Stanford in the fall but over the past few years i've also had this same bullshit where I try to master something and I just get locked in this loop of fapping, video games, and hitting the dab pen.

I don't really even know what I should master. Martial Arts don't make money although I love them, I can't imagine coding for 10,000 hours, I lost my passion for my instrument. I've always wanted to paint but I feel as if it's wayy too late to start and become a competent artist as compared to those kids who have been training since like 5.

I do have a language that I've been practicing, but other than that boys what should I do?

That’s your problem. Most of the worst decisions I ever made were from following “advice from older people”. Unless you are getting some specific advice from a specific expert, like a chess master on how to get better at chess; then mentor thing is mostly a meme. You need to learn to think critically and weight the pros and cons of things.

Being a generalist is a lot about improvisation and opportunity seeking. Your mindset is already flawed if you're looking for a good career choice, you need to look around you, dig on job sites find a business, any business, apply and work on that. The beauty of the generalist is he thrives in adversity, the more challenging and unequipped for the task, the stronger he becomes. In the end it literally doesn't matter what career you start in, I met a guy on a plane who quit his job trading petroleum derived chemicals to become a short film director and after that trip I quit my job in financial planning and spent time working for a chemical company, now I work in sales for oil drilling equipment and I'll probably quit that job next year. The path of the generalist is suited for those who can embrace uncertainty. I will probably keep changing careers until I die or retire rich. It's a high risk/high reward approach to life.

Art is fucking weird though. It literally combines all the knowledge inside your head into an observable piece. Actually practicing painting/drawing/sculpting etc is necessary of course, but it is simply technique and a fraction of what goes into a piece of art.

Knowledge about history, society, mathematics etc can all be translated into captivating art if you just find the right way to express that knowledge. It will take time, but not 10 000 hours.
