Again the problem with holding stocks in any company with bankruptcy threat is that even if they are a strong bailout candidate, that bailout will almost certainly include stipulations that the government owns equity in that company.

The whole diversification and not feeling pain from one bad apple using index funds and passive investing is pretty much one of the key points for passive investing. That being said, I think Michael and others in the hedge fund business have a point, but it's not a concern because the people running these things are extremely upfront about what they do. Like non-optimal returns and killing price discovery and letting bad actors get away with various things. But the problem is that the average person investing in these funds don't care about these things and the fact that active managers are charging fees not worth their returns and not matching up to an index is a problem. Eventually, it will stabilize because active will be charging fees that will be worth what they can do as the free market dictates.

The only thing they have a point about and that I can not answer against is what happens when an index fund is in net outflow mode, what happens? That may happen when boomers en masse start cashing in within the next 20-30 years due to demographics but if their projections are right, that means you should "technically" get out of index funds once boomers hit the average life expectancy in the US if investing in the S&P and etc.

Australian here. The general view here for Vanguard boomers is that to hedge against Australia you just need a chunk of your portfolio in US stocks, and that's enough for a somewhat "global" portfolio since the whole world is somewhat correlated with the US, so buying more EU or China or whatever is less of a diversification play and more of a 5% satellite play ("I think X will outperform")

Flipping that logic, you don't really need to "diversify" from out of the US, at least not to any large degree

I think this is part of a thesis for small caps. Only certain hedge funds include it anymore as part of their strategy. It is nuts how beaten down they have been since 2008 compared to the ETF playgrounds of the SPY, Dow, and NASDAQ.
