Recent MechE graduate, about to start at an energy company making $70k/yr. The work is quite soul draining and unfulfilling since all our actual engineering work gets outsourced (I’ll end up making excel spreadsheets all day). I’m curious if there’s any self employed engineers here? What’s your experience/advice?

I'm A MechE too, couple years out of School.

Actually got a job in Data Analysis. It is exactly is you described but the paychecks and bonuses cant be denied. I'm always one more paycheck away from putting in my two weeks.

The Quarantine was a welcome reprieve.

Get good at machine learning and get a high paying job as a data scientist. Your knowledge of vector calc and linear algebra, combined with your general problem solving skills will let you wipe the floor with these CS kiddies.

t. left unfulfilling MechE job to become a data scientist, no regrets
