I did wonder this actually. This may have been a big "ohshit" moment to those who were making money selling calls during the downtrend, and those same people selling off as necessary to close their calls while simultaneously depressing the price to maximize profit, but haven't looked into it at all other than seeing the fact that there were giant red dildos directly after DHT and STNG earnings so it's pure speculation, obviously influenced also by my bias of having a large stake in tankers

It might, but with strong earnings and divvy it will be a clear save haven for everybody from retail to institutions. We all know that when the oil glut will be over the earnings of tankers will drop and reduced demand for oil transportation may even fuck them. On the other hand, if they pay of debt the coming months (or even years if traffic etc stay fucked) and use the money to get their shit in order, they might be viable long term holds.

On the other hand, if the market really shits the bed with tech leading the drop, retail and institutions might even take the inherent risk of tankers for granted as the tech market, which pay nearly no divvy and only have their "stable" growth going for them, start tanking.

I actually have averaged down. I have averaged down now all the way to having no more money left to invest. The only thing I can do now is if tomorrow they dump again, if NAT goes down less than FRO and DHT I can liquidate it to buy more FRO and DHT. Another point is that it's still bullish for tankers. If they do start stopping their pumps, it means they expect a long term low price environment that is going to be long enough to justify breaking their shit and taking a year to start shit up again. News that says there's still supply issues (like texas) to the point they have to change policies means that they believe the lack of demand is sufficiently temporary to keep going, which in turn means that tankers are still something they're looking at. The longer their expected return to normal is delayed, the more they'll have to choose between tankers and shutting down, and the more they'll choose tankers as they're already invested, despite tanker rates only going vertical.
Already those tankers that have reported have amazing spot day occupancy rates, and it will only become better over time.

It all hinges on the next 2 futures contracts my friend. oil producers can sell futures contracts via banks. So effectively they can outsource "where the fuck do you put this oil" to someone else. I think the paper interest in those futures is far greater than the actual physical interest or even ability to store. Texas might poison its own water supply dumping oil in caves there is so much. Yes, and it also locked in a number of long term contracts, which just makes this whole thing so puzzling. It's not just putting money on black, DHT has essentially guaranteed divvies on its stock for the next year or so. Even a pessimistic view of the underlying business would not support current prices for a stock like STNG.

If I had to guess, the algos aren't sophisticated enough to figure out how the tanker market works and think it should just buy/sell based on the oil spot price, and since these are such small companies seeing abnormally high volume, somebody throws a few million one way or the other and the stock goes absolutely apeshit.

>> No.18914889

tankers got clapped, not a whole lot to say. Logic says they should be valued a lot more, they're not. Waiting on Rystad's latest report to run numbers but probably going to end up revising my tankers exit down.

This is indirectly related, but I suggest to everyone give "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" a read. It's out of copyright, and free on archive.org. Jesse Livermore was a legendary speculator, and so much of the stuff we see now still holds true today. We don't have ticker tape or bucket shops, but human behavior is 100% identical. FOMO is the same in 1920 as now. Newspapers were replaced by /biz and CNBC. Irrational markets are the same too- IIRC Livermore had a play, but the stock just *wasn't* doing what he predicted it would, and was dead for days. Right when he sold the bad stonk at a loss, it moved. If he held just a little longer, would have been a tidy profit. Sound familiar?

$FRO $NAT $STNG $DHT interesting clue. Whoever is doing this is being clever enough about it to not trigger the short sale circuit breakers.

Almost all of the drops are 8-9% being very careful to avoid going 10% or more where the 2 day circuit breakers kick in.

This is 100% manipulation and actually should be investigated.

someone's manipulating the market, retail investors only hold 10% of the shares, 60% are held by institutions and it's relatively easy to do so when tankers are small caps stocks. Economy reopening and oil prices going up are already priced in by the initial drop last week. There was also a reversal pattern on Monday. The plan is simple, with the decoy of rising oil demand and tankers being hyped, crash the tanker prices to make profit off all of those trying to catch the tankers mooning as they buy and panic sell, then buy back in when there's blood in the streets, disguise the mooning of tankers along with the earnings report of one of the tankers, basically what Buffett tried to do or did. It's profitable as hell Remember the FA and TA show a bullish trend, even bearish analysts for tankers are puzzled as hell by the ridiculous drop and volatility. Tankers have the best quarter in years and have even better quarters to come and the stock drops near to 52 week lows? I'm not buying it, definitely some shenanigans going on, this shit is more volatile than Tesla right now and that's saying a lot

so they can easily manipulate the price if they can manipulate a substantial portion of retail
goldman's holdings, even as increased as they are on that chart, only constitute 1.6% percent and if retail is 10% like >>18925218 says, then even with them increasing position that much it won't be enough to offset the panic selling of retail

They all reported having signed contracts right now. DHT: 66%. STNG: the cfo ran off to deal with even more contracts. They say they'll update data soon in that regard and suggested it's more record-breaking shit.
You are right about the delays, but that just means now is the only time to buy because in 6 months it will be too late. They aren't taking a profit hit in the next 6 months either according to themselves as they themselves assume significant forward-looking profit at the tail of 2019 deals. The last missing piece is that it's common in the tankers industry for people to agree for fixture but not lift it if they either fail to get the deal they wanted on oil, or if rates are higher in the agreement as they are when the time comes to lift. The thing is, with the low oil prices and a looming second bottom, this is unlikely to happen. Considering those delinquency issues, tankers usually report discounted spot contract prices that account for the likelihood of delinquency. Given the above, this means the actual contract prices are actually much higher than they were reported to be.
Overall I really think now is the one time to buy but I agree that it will take 6 months or so to see the real results of the investment. In the meantime, I suggest selling slightly otm calls on everything to reduce your cost basis.

Not really. I see it like this:
High oil supply, high oil demand: good for tankers
High oil supply, low oil demand: VERY good for tankers (because of imminent storage shortage)
Low oil supply, low oil demand: bad for tankers

The latter is the reason why tankers dumped in January, China was buying less crude, at the same time people were expecting OPEC cuts

We might see a low supply-low demand scenario this year, but the extra earnings from Q1 and Q2 should be more than enough to place tankers reasonably above the February lows

>I think production will always outpace demand

It takes some time for the supply side to fully adapt but in the end it's inevitable since storage capacity puts a limit on how long oil producers can pump more than needed. The small guys can't produce at a loss ad infinitum.

Lately, there's been talk about the world being past peak oil demand with this crisis. IF this is going to be the case (and I'm somewhat skeptical about this), it would be bad news for tankers. Maybe that's one reason why investors are skeptical about tankers, the long-term outlook is unclear even though financials right now are great.
