They're gone probably if you reinstalled the client. But every epoch your flips get reset so you can not use those for the next epoch

Client will tell you when to make flips. If you will pass the validation, your next task will be create some flips.

Keep node running if you want to mine. If you want to have downtime, just switch mining to off to avoid penalty.

Candidates don't need to make flips. Only newbies, verified and humans. It's not necessary to run the node 24/7 but it gives you money so why not. I leave my node running on my laptop all the time. You can turn off your node anytime you want (as long as you flip the mining switch in the GUI before shutting down the client, otherwise you get roughly 5 DNA penalty).
