Hey guys. Is the US market actually pumping from foreign investment only? Look at the overnight pattern. we're aware of that "dollar milkshake" dynamic. If foreign assets and debts are tied to poorly performing countries, wouldn't that imply that money might be evacuating and coming into the US markets? Additionally, this might explain the correlation with BTC/USD price action. Thoughts? Stocks actually maybe only up in the very near term?

Let us talk about MSFT

First off Microsoft hit Xbox Live records. More people went on there then ever before.

Two the cloud services division has record demand to the point of causing slow downs. Regular blogs from msft talk about this. Don't believe that then goog just had great cloud revenue.

Third so many people are working from home that business had to buy extra computers. The company I work for bought every laptop at Walmart.

So do you still think that Microsoft earnings will be bad. I don't.

I remember in 2008 when things kinda felt the same, you had some times where the market seemed to be recovering and then boom. Fact is stocks are still extremely expensive now, and it doesn't make sense. I think being in cash right now is pretty smart.

>How does dividend works?
You get paid a certain amount per share you own as an incentive to keep the stock. Usually implemented for companies which don't have big growth opportunities by design (e.g. energy companies) or that make so much money they don't know what to do with it. Some classes of companies are forced by law to give dividends, including MLPs and REITs. However, US MLPs and REITs' dividends are considered 'business income' and not dividend if you're canadian and are subject to 40% withholding that is not recoverable in registered accounts (because the tax treaty doesn't cover those).
Regular US dividend, on the other hand, has only 15% withholding and is recoverable except in TFSAs. In RRSPs there is no withholding at all.
Canadian REITs do like US REITs and often split dividends into various kinds of returns, including return on capital, which reduces your cost basis instead of paying you outright (this means you can pocket the money completely tax-free, and will be paying taxes as capital gains when you sell the stock instead).

>I know its some bonus they give each year for some with stocks? How do I know if the stock I am buying has some?
Google the stock or check with your broker, it's usually indicated. It's also part of a company's financials. Otherwise some companies as explained before must systematically yield dividend.

Most oil is still paying dividends mate, there was no reason to liquidate if you bought in at least relatively cheap. I got FRO, DHT, and NAT, all losing now overall except FRO which I got in super early with. But this is why you hedge like this, so you win both ways. Tax rate for canadian dividend is 50% of marginal rate. Equivalently, you can consider half the dividend to be taxed at the marginal rate.
However for US stocks it's 100% of marginal.
But if you have US dividend stocks in an RRSP you're good to go, it's not taxed and has no withholding. If you hold it in a TFSA, there is an unrecoverable 15%, but that's much less than even canadian stocks would be taxed at.
Gross up for US stocks is 15%, and 38% for canadian stocks.
