>For example, an investor borrows 100X and converts it to 100Y at the fixed exchange rate of 1X to 1Y. If the nation X runs out of foreign reserve Y in this period or if they are forced to allow their currency to float, the value of X may drop to an exchange rate of 2X to 1Y. Investors can then exchange their 100Y for 200X, allowing them to pay off the loan of 100X and maintaining a profit of 100X.
If paper gold is unbacked, wouldn't it be very easy to launch such an attack on "gold"?

The Central and Northern reaches have produced a surprising amount of glacial and vein fed nugget gold. The most gold has been found on the Potomac River in the Great Falls area, but some other areas worth investigating are Catonsville in Baltimore County, Libertytown in Frederick County, and in Howard County it may be profitable to check out Woodbine and Simpsonville. The gold will be mostly fine, but native gold wire also appears in course gravels and boulder creeks feeding the Potomac.

Its for extreme circumstances
In my country (Vietnam) its common for families to hoard gold, and until recently it was the nationwide standard to quote large purchases such as property or cars in terms of their gold value.

You can still buy houses and other things easily with just gold but the government really hates it because they want everyone to use their currency even though the inflation is crazy.

Still people store up because history shows it can pay off in an emergency, like when the đồng crashed in the late 70s/80s or when people tried to escape south VN in ‘75

Also few people trust banks as far as they could throw them, so gold and other precious commodities (but mostly gold) are a good way to hedge other investments

Hey Pan, long time reader, first time replier. I'm in Southern Illinois, right where the glaciers stopped. I've researched panning in this area and found this info:

newspaper story (Peoria-Star Journal, Aug. 6, 1975) reported that, around 1900, small amounts of gold were recovered from a shaft in Bald Knob, a large hill in Union County. There is no evidence to back up the claim, but some of the limestone and chert bedrock in that region may have been silicified by low temperature hydrothermal waters, which might have deposited a little gold. However, tripoli and ganister have been mined in the areas of most intense alteration, and no gold or sulifide mineralization has been found.

An unpublished manuscript by J.E. Lamar (1968) of the Illinois State Geological Survey describes occurrences known at that time. For example, on page 20, item 6 records a reported gold find in Jackson County about 1925. Boulders collected from a field near Carbondale were said to have assayed $25 per ton. No additional gold bearing boulders were found.

I live near both Bald Knob in Union County and Carbondale. Is this worth pursuing further?

different anon here, just my opinion but Gold is more stable and the superior store of wealth to keep your money safe. It is the first to grow in price but not by a lot and does not fluctuate in price a lot. Silvers value is suppressed and has the superior growth potential to rise quite high in price, usually after Gold. Its better to store your wealth with the goal to grow it.

Its good to buy Silver when the Silver to Gold ratio is high, where it take many ounces of Silver to equal 1 oz of Gold (when Silver is cheap to buy), then when the ratio is low (when Silver sells for a lot) you sell it to convert it into Gold.

Some people think 10% of your stack should be gold and 90% in Silver, or 20/80 or 5/95 or all Silver or all Gold

I think 10/90 is good. New stackers should go all in on Silver until they hit 200 oz or more

like those reports say, it sounds more like the boulders were brought in by the glaciation and left as the ice retreated. You will likely find fine gold particles in glacial sediments in your area, but nothing of substantial value. It never hurts to look though. Look for the usual signs of placer gold, in oxidized course gravels or boulder clays sitting close to bedrock. Never know until you look.

yes so long as nobody else has filed a claim on it and it hasn't been removed from prospecting by the federal agency. Both require checking with the local rangers to know for sure.

but in general in the US panning is allowed on public lands that meet those criteria. No permit required. You can't move more than a yard of dirt (which isn't a lot) and you can't use motorized equipment, only a shovel and pan, or in some areas a very small sluice.

For placer and hard rock, you couldnt have picked a better spot. Excellent placers in boulder / course gravel beds along Trabuco Creek, including nuggets up to 3 ounces found near surface. Now, for the most part the hard rock in the region is all claimed up, but a lot of the creeks in the area are still unstaked. Adding on to what Anon >>18708330 said, the other driving factor to gold spiking to 3K is what we're seeing now, a severe disconnect between the "spot price" (actually a price on paper for gold delivered sometime 'in the future', one of the kikes' oldest tricks), and what you're paying for the physical metal. This used to be hidden and explained away as "premiums", but Corona-chan and the subsequent worldwide lockdown shuttering the mines has exposed it for what it really is.

Eventually, the normies will finally understand they need to get metals, but by then, the physical price will be far higher than the paper says, likely at or beyond the $3K/ozt level. Problem is, quite a number of them will think to go with the cheapest option (kiked paper), but get screwed and be left as a bagholder for the now-worthless paper gold, which was oversold to begin with.

>>18708443
That may be, but if the argument is that wages tied to silver have been steady throughout history, why then would the US minimum wage be .89375ozt per hour just 56 years ago ($1.25 an hour federal minimum, .715 ozt in $1 of 90% US coins, freshly minted in 1964)?

The standard of living was much lower then though, so you gotta be careful, to live at what we consider reasonable comfort you probably need what an ounce a day buys at least.

This argument is too black and white. Between modern life and Mad Max world there is a whole spectrum of "broken down" societies that would still value precious metals.

As long as wealthy powerful men and vain women value shiny things which will be forever, there will be a floor of exchange value under which PMs will never fall.

>> No.18709316

>>18709231
Also even if your own society devolves to a state at which jewellery making is not practical and barter is generally preferred to coinage, if ANY civilized society continues to exist in the world, gold and silver will be prized for its value as a lucrative export.

Imagine your society devolves into some kind of Medieval shithole. There will still be (((metal dealers))) with contacts in other countries who will want gold from you, and everyone will know this and start to value gold and hence begin using it as a currency in the absence of anything else reliable, by default.

It's worth keeping in mind that even at the present moment, fiat only beats metals because you are effectively forbidden from using it as a medium of exchange in preference to banknotes. If you are a (((merchant))) of any kind, a baker, a bookseller, a newspaper stand owner whatever, you cannot refuse to accept paper fiat and so this makes a fool out of anyone who would push customers to offer metals in return for their goods.

This is all speculation, but suppose the tax on PMs was abolished and paper dollars were no longer legal tender. What would happen is that those with particularly desired goods to sell would start getting picky about what they want from customers in exchange. Luxury goods, precious stones and yes metals would be demanded. At first this would only happen with luxury and high-end goods, but eventually it would filter through the entire economy.

Obviously I can't prove that this would happen, but when you consider that A) before the federal government worked to discourage metals they were the favoured currency for centuries and B) the government feels the need to strongly discourage people from using metal as money, you get the strong impression...

I ve seen the name Great Falls pop up before in my research but I was unaware it was illegal to dig there. Also yes, most of Marylands gold comes from glaciation, however there are hard rock deposits as well that feed into the Potomac river as well.

Try any waterway near the Haile Gold mine near Great Falls. There are several hard rock mines in the Carolina's, they triggered the US's first great gold rush in fact.

Search for a deep oxidized red silt or gravel, sitting on a cement like clay bed several feet from the surface. It carries by all accounts a very large amount of fine gold dust, likely weathered from nearby ore deposits. This layer appears in both North and South Carolina but I am unsure where to best look, start your own research from here.

Just be aware: the only nickels that are 'War Nickels' have the mint mark above Monticello. There are nickels from 1943 that are non-silver, and even Philadelphia put their mint mark above the dome on the silver ones. Pic related for where to look.

You may also find a 1944 nickel with only the small mark to the right of the building. This is a counterfeit (the 'Henning Nickel'), but a popular one that's still valuable to numismatists.

If its in a known gold belt, do the standard search methods, look in bedrock cracks, boulder patches, pan under tree roots. If its totally dry try the magnet methods, use a rare earth magnet on a stick and poke around in the soil, looking for heavy metals that attach. focus on areas with oxidized gravels as well. no, i'm betting on a short-term pullback in gold to $1600-1650 before it ramps to $1800+, and silver to $12-14 before it spikes above $17. this will yield me a small shekel gain which i will use to directly buy more mining stocks or PMs. Gold will be $2500-3000 by end of year but it's not going to go up in a straight vertical line. Silver will be $50-100 by end of this year and early next year. Already a disconnect in spot and physical price, as well as supply.

It isn't very dangerous because if mines start coming back online and we return to normal then production will resume, causing a psychological belief that supply will go up and spot prices should go down. It's somewhat dangerous in case supply is already tight even if mines operate at full speed.

In general, I no longer want to go "all in" because I've been wrong so many times in my 20's. Now I'm in my 30s feel like I need to do things different by hedging, and only sell when I'm up. thanks for reading my persona blog.

the gulf coast is the best because a couple Spanish treasure fleets went down right near there. Keys are good too. But even the eastern coast produces Spanish treasure on occasion. gun confiscations paired with bullion confiscations, starting with people who own too many guns or the big semi-autos, and people who owe back taxes or are suspected of hiding assets. it will all be done under the guise of homeland security, fema, anti-hoarding. expect all of this to start with a false flag, and they'll spend 2 weeks covering the perp and show that he wrote some gay manifesto that includes a rant about sound money and ron paul. this creates pre-text for search and seizure. the gov knows there's a high correlation between people who hoard PMs and gun ownership. it's a two birds one stone thing. i recommend anyone worried about this to get out of major cities. but even if you live in a cabin in the woods they'll still find you somehow *if* you attract their attention and leave a trail to your new location.

i just want to be left alone, i don't even have a gun and i don't have much in the way of PMs. others on /biz/ have stacks 1000x bigger than mine. they'll continue to fuck the middle and working class simply through more taxes and stealth inflation. food will be 30% more expensive by winter 2020. i only plan to get a gun to hunt deer and ideally live in some place near a stream so i can pan for gold. i would live off of the deer jerky, organs, etc. and pan. i'll be like ted but without the insanity and desire to influence society. fuck society, fuck humanity (in general) because they truly are all NPCs. look at their slavish obedience and instant belief in the covid hoax.

based, I envy you, actually going out into nature and finding the precious metals in the natural state, in all the different types of ores and learning the geography and being out in the middle of the wilderness.

Do you think there exists land in Alaska/Canada that no human has stepped foot on that might contain nuggets of gold just sitting on the surface similar to the gold rush out in San Francisco area?
Do you think in other remote wilderness places outside of US/Canada like maybe in remote parts of Chile/Argentina/Siberia/West China/Turkemistan area?
What do you think about Antarctica, the parts that are not iced over, and what of the theories of underground rivers that flow below longstanding glaciers as agents of gold particle collection?

There are for sure places where man has not stepped before still out there. The further north you go, the less people have ever been there in general. If I didn't have such a phobia of extreme cold, I would go to the far reaches of Canada's arctic islands to prospect. One of my mentors, a man by the name of Bam did mineral exploration past Baffin island in the 1950s, and he believes that there are insane mineral deposits never ever explored just waiting up there.

I am sure there are amazing placers under Antarctica as well, but were never going to get at them unless the ice all leaves. Greenlands seen an explosion of placer finds over the last 3 years, discovery channel had a tv show about a crew of guys who went and checked out placers on Greenland and their government got mad worried about a gold rush happening.

I myself have stepped on top of high mountains in the Stikine, and Atlin districts that I believe I was the first man to be on in maybe 2000 years or longer. There is still so much to find out in the world, we just have to look.

An old man in his coin shop once told me "if the world collected Roman coins like it did collect other certain things, these ancient things wouldn't be hundreds of dollars, but thousands".

Roman coins are HIGHLY underrated coins and because few people collect them, the very nice ones you can find are very cheap.

late reply but in case you're still here:
yeah leverage ETFs are risky and best to hold positions in them for only 1-5 days. however, in rare cases they pump for longer than that on multi-day big moves, and sustain a high price.

i plan to take profit and get out by end of April or first of March if everything goes my way. 2 charts show both are topping out. basically risk/reward is no longer good to go long gold or miners since they've already been pumping and news is priced in. so if i'm right, now i just sit back and wait for the powers that be drop the price of gold back down again. a term zerohedge likes to use is "monkey hammer". also keep in mind that the price of gold is carefully controlled:

they contain the stated value in gold,

so,
All you'd need to do is take a few hundred of them and dunk them in a bucket ($3) full of RODI water (.$0.12) and 6% sodium cyanide ($0.08) until dissolved. Then precipitate with zinc shavings ($0.02), filter through 3 filter papers ($0.15), burn with propane flame ($0.05), and anneal with the hydraulic press of your choice.

you'd need a few hundred of them, but for a couple bux you can turn them into a tiny little lump of pure gold. Cheap and easy to refine.

if you happen to have a cyanide electrobath it's even easier.

I also amalgamate, and I've read both that mercury only adsorbs gold, while other authors suggest that mercury dissolves gold. I'm curious what your thoughts are on that. Personally I don't think it dissolves gold because an amalgam made with chunky gold comes out chunky in the chamois and in the retort. But I don't know for sure. I know mercury dissolves copper and aluminum. Not sure on gold.

thoughts?

I ve noticed the same with my milling work. when I load ore with chunky vein gold in it the mercury bonds to the fragments and if you look at it through a hand lens you can see the mercury attacking the gold, converting the material to amalgam. I am not sure if mercury dissolves copper, I ve used copper plates to recover micro particles of mercury from my tailings but yes it will attack and destroy aluminum, its why its not allowed on aircraft. I have several books on precious metal refining and they say it converts to amalgam, while others say it only absorbs. strange.

lets put it this way, one gravel bar on the Fraser river in 1863 produced 20,000 ounces that was recorded. Hundreds of thousands of ounces were never recorded due to the government gold tax at the time of 15%.

The first strike was made by Mormons working at Sutter's Kingdom or Sutter's Mill more specifically. They were veterans of the Mormon battalion that fought in the Mexican American war and settled down in cali working for Sutter because he claimed his ranch as independent land from Mexico.

so these Mormons were working on digging a mill trace for Sutter, and noticed gold on the timbers of the mill trace after they laid them. They told Sutter who gave them permission to quietly start collecting. All together they probably hauled off about a ton of gold in the 6-8 months for the word to spread and the gold rush to really get going. Then they headed back to Utah to meet up with the rest of the Mormons.

the Mormons originally planned on settling California, not Utah, but the gold rush destroyed that plan. The returning Mormons from cali donated their gold to the church. The church needed the money so they packaged gold into small envelopes and this circulated in place of coins for a while. Later that year the Mormon church minted their own gold coins, which are now quite valuable, and were probably made from California gold.

rumors swirled up that the gold that my family and others donated actually came from the Uintah mountains in Utah, and the story of the Lost Rhoades Gold Mine in Utah got started.

but yeah. Just gold all over the creek bottoms from they way they tell it. They had their kids and wives out there every day picking nuggets out of the dirt and dropping them in jars. Incredibly rich. The land at Sutter's Mill still bears my family's name, Rhoades Corner.
