Can someone explain to me the purpose of buying silver/gold coins over bars?

It seems to me that dealers will sell as close to spot price as possible on bars but charge subjective premiums (year of minting, mint source, condition, design, etc.) on top of the silver/gold content.

Seems like a bad speculative investment to not just buy in bars because when it comes time to sell, it's just an element and a weight.
