I bought etherum on coin base and need help understanding what a wallet is and what its for, I hear you should put the coins into a wallet vs keep in it on the exchange.

I downloaded the wallet but dont know how to use it, what are contracts.


At the top of the page is a progress bar with a fluctuating number of peers and blocks in the tens of millions, and it makes my computer climb up to 150 degrees, what the hell is going on.

he's trolling you. Basically an exchange is online so it's vulnerable to hacking or attacks. A hardware wallet is stored offline onto your PC.

Coinbase exchange is insured and pretty safe though.

OP your stupid. The wallet has to synchronize. It should 2-3 hours, more when you have a shitty PC or internet connection. Also there are online wallets. Search for "Ethereum Wallet Online", but they cost monies.

It's not wrong to have a wallet. Contracts don't matter at that point. They may say you need one to see your transactions but it's not needed. Just look here for transactions of your wallet: https://etherchain.org/account/0xYOURADDRESS
