it's a mental illness dude, they are convinced they are supposed to be a mental illness, and then these fucked up doctors botch their surgeries. It's so painful for them to feel like they are the wrong gender and they just want to be the person they feel like they were meant to be. it's fucking sad as fuck. to them, advice to the contrary seems like they are being unjustly harassed. I've known several trans people, a couple of them were major shitheads, but one of them, who is one of my roommates, is the sweetest person. I try to gender them correctly, I slip up sometimes. They are on hormones but I really shudder at the idea of a surgeon trying to play god with their genitals. I don't trust at doctor to operate on my knee. These are desperate sad people who need someone to listen to them. I definitely believe there should be free counseling available to trans people because they definitely don't deserve their suffering. they commit suicide and are murdered at a substantially higher rate than everyone else.

I don't know how to help them. It's been present in human society forever, only recently have we had people vain enough to think they can perform "corrective surgery" which can never be reversed
