PhD is the worst fate anyone can be condemned to. Anyone that tells you there are people who enjoy academia as it is today is a charlatan or shill for their university program. How do leveraged certificates work when the price is in pennies? Example: bear certificate tracking sp500 with 8x leverage, price has decayed to about 4 pennies.

So for the price to increase to 5 pennies, the value of sp500 needs to drop 25%/8 = 3.125%

The certificate is compounded daily.

Does this mean, that if I buy the certificate now and value of sp500 drops 2.5% for four days straight, I get nothing despite betting the right direction? In fact, I probably need to sell the certificate at one cent less making 25% instant loss?

Am I wrong

Not true. CS PhDs make 150k starting almost anywhere in NA, nordic europe or switzerland and still live great anywhere else.
Math PhDs exist in exactly 2 companies in the world, same as physics PhDs, and starve in the streets anywhere else.
Bio PhDs are glorified labtechs and get paid little but more than enough to live a middleclass life.
EE PhDs also make tons of money.
Overall it depends greatly on field, and in general the more theoretical your stuff is the less money you get. CS is in a bubble because muh ML + crypto + IoT, but bioinformatics is likely to rise up in the coming years.

>Day 3: sp500 drops 3% more, no effect

Not true, PhDs usually don't give a shit about money so long as they can live comfortably (those are people who are used to 80-105 hours work weeks making less than minimum wage, selling plasma on the side to survive, and stealing free food from conferences they're not actually invited to to save money, all of this for 5-10 years) and do research. The high cost of PhDs in industry is purely self-inflicted.

I strongly recommend working for at least 1 year. This will:
- Let you build up capital to survive in better conditions during grad school, should you choose to pursue it after that one year
- Can get you free education from your employer
- Gets you experience, making you more employable if things go south or as a contractor during grad school
- Gives you more time to check out grad programs and talk to people
And many other advantages.
Applied math in general is one of the high-paying PhDs, so on that point you're good to go as well.

Another reason why the bottom is far away: this.

"Citigroup is optimistic: We believe 60% of working-age US population could be tested by end of April and 95% by end of May, meaning almost 90 mln sidelined workers cold return to their jobs as early as mid-May. This could contain the contraction of global GDP from 7% to just 2%"

What reality are these people living in? They think the US is going to administer 30x the amount of tests it has in the last 2 months, in the next 10 days, and people will go to work.

Either they know this won't happen and they're saying this to catch bagholders, or they will lie about it and say it did happen to pretend the economy has "restarted".

It depends on what you mean by 'worth'. If you want to do research, the only way is PhD. Industry wants you to give results every 3 months and it must be plus value added kpi online customer driven dollar added. You're not doing research in industry research labs. Been there done that.
But don't expect for one moment that you'll rest for even a fraction of a second. You can have 5 patents and 10 first author papers in nature and you'll still be stressing about finding even one (1) mediocre post-doc offer. The competition is fiercer than ever, faculty positions are scarcer than ever. I like it though. But always have a plan B and, in my opinion, always find a way to leave academia to get a good job if you run out of steam or funds.

risky, definitely wouldnt have done that on margin. those arent "cheapies" because when its time to pay the creditor you are going to get shafted. if anything TSLA is more likely to drop as reality settles in of factory closures and reduced confsumer demand not to mention supply and logistic issues

>Would working as a quant or trader be feasible with my degrees?
Generally yes, but getting in at big firms is extremely competitive.
>Worst case I’m sure I can find something within the ee/cs sphere if I had to, it’s broad enough
That's a good way to go about it. Look into multidisciplinary fields like computational biology, fintech or computational physics (like CFDs, not like string memes) depending on your interests.

Like I said. Difficult times right now. Lots of companies will default on their debt, same for real estate. If you're a noob just stay out of the market for a while. 2020 is not safe at all. You can take a little bit of your money and start trading. That's not a bad idea to get into it. Read about stocks, futures, bonds, get your default dose of doom porn by Peter Schiff but don't buy into his stuff all too much at first. There's no easy answer to market related things. It's like asking Magnus Carlson for his winning strategy.
There is none. It's about skin in the game.

Yeah, that’s one of the reasons I was potentially looking at doing masters. As for your second point I’m actually going through a few books on functional analysis so I understand the PDE theory better, so yeah

I'm sorry HAL-sama, dip to 7 so I can have you back.
