Oil futures in particular have always been a way for crude producers to move product up the chain without having to have their own refineries or oil transport , etc. Usually tankers, trains, and refineries are what buy these contracts. And it is a CONTRACT. There are penalties for not picking up the oil as the buyer or selling it as the seller that extend internationally.
Retail speculators probably much like yourself tried to get in between and hold these contracts to sell back to oil refineries before the contract date was up (today).
But there was no demand from refineries because there is no space in storage and no domestic demand. All casual retail investors are getting fucked thinking that oil is "easy money"
