The real problem is that people go through the interview based on how well they woo people, not how good they do in the technical part of the interview (which is usually just about muh leetcode and the real job is 1/10000th as demanding despite how simple those questions are). This both means that in practice, a technical person has no problem knowing from the interview if someone is going to make it or not, but also that the technical person's opinion never matters.
Moreover, a significant fraction of hires are not hired through the interview process at all in the first place, but instead through nepotism of some kind.

That said, if some firm had a working ds-based solution they wouldn't tell anyone until they change it for something better, understandably. There are ds/ml jobs in fintech but I don't know what that resembles.
You can always go full-tard academia and learn ds for stock market or some shit.

With regard to webdev + finance, that's pretty easy and straightforward to see: be it stocktwit or finviz, you can do anything from running a business out of such an idea to contracting to financial institutions to build their web stack. The first step is to build a portfolio though. Minimum 3 sites, 5 is better, is a good bet.

Think of it as getting paid to buy the dip. Look at the chart or meme lines or whatever and pick a price that you'd be happy to own the stock at. Then look at the option chain on your broker's site and sell the put with about a month to expiration that most closely matches your preferred buying price. That way if it reaches your price you would have bought anyway and if it doesn't you get free money from bobo paypigs. At expiration, do it again until eventually you get your shares. If it takes a while you could collect a ton of free premium in the meantime
