The only reason those oil producers are producing anything is because of loans that they refuse to payoff.
If the US wanted to protect local oil drillers without eliminating the free market, they would simply stop importing oil.
Instead, banks and US tax dollars come in to save the day.
Right now US oil drillers shouldn't be pumping any oil if they were catering to the market demand.

They have a poor current ratio so they might not be able to weather hardship. Then again they'd probably get bailed out before they'd have to declare. Over all they are taking huge risks with their strategy which relies in perfect conditions.
