Nowadays, the opposite is true. War machines are so complex and specialized that very few people have the qualifications to build them, and their manufacturing process has largely been automated anyway. Even things as common as guns have to be precisely machined to work properly, and that's why guns cost so much. War is actually bad for the economy now, because even more tax money would just get sucked up by the military-industrial complex instead of going towards actually helping people.
