But the new thing is to not buy the indexes and to only buy the companies with fortress balance sheets.

Yeah, you'd be doing great if you bought ETF's containing the highest quality bluechips (VIG or maybe SCHX), ETF's containing US treasuries (NOT internernational bonds), Paper Gold (GLD, GLDM, BAR, etc), and a good stash of USD for dip-buying and other opportunities, and as a hedge against deflation :^)
