You can buy shares of trusts such as CEF, PHYS, or GLD. If you want allocated gold in your own name, you can go through BullionVault or GoldMoney (I believe GoldMoney allocates gold in your name).

I was going to recommend gold bars from PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, or Valcambi but it looks like there is a run on those just as there is with coins. If you are able to find them, I think the premiums will be very high.

If you had to buy right now, I'd recommend buying PHYS. It's a way of getting exposure to gold with the lowest premiums (it's currently trading at a tiny discount to NAV). If you really want to take physical possession, you could always hang on to PHYS and wait for the physical markets to settle down, sell the PHYS and buy the physical gold.

PHYS looks to be well-run and it's highly unlikely that something bad will happen. I have a percentage of my precious metals holdings with PHYS.

It’s not perfect solution but I’d say buy GLD. Each share is 1/10 oz, but only a few selected traders can trade shares for the gold in its vault so it doesn’t track physical spot prices perfectly right now because it’s hard to move bullion because of covid. Since it’s below spot price theoretically traders should redeem shares to sell the bullion which will close its gap with spot eventually.
Also you get taxed slightly for the gold they sell for admin expenses.
But its gold is stored in London so the fed won’t be able to steal it.
