i give up bear bros. we've tried for a month to demonstrate solid fundamentals but they have repeatedly been turned upside down by unlimited jerome. every time we made the "correct" picks, the stocks went the opposite direction.

bad news? bullish. good news? bearish. it's completely fucked. boeing plant shuts down?
stock soars 9%. 6m unemployment? dow jones gains 5%. i give up. they've beaten me into submission... i have no choice buy to just by SPY and hold like a good goy... maybe some vanguard low cost index funds... check on my 401k...

we have no choice but to just buy normie stocks and accept standard gains... i give up and i just bought FB... i am a bull now....

also this current financial crisis was mostly caused by people taking on way too much debt so maybe you should consider getting out of whatever your current debt is and not taking on any more.

No to be honest I'm just sick and tired of Dunning–Kruger effect, "My brother is dating a nurse, and she said that..." type posts on /biz/ where some nobody tries to pejoratively explain to me that no medicine will ever be helpful when it comes to Coronoa, that nobody should be leaving their house for the next 4 weeks, that 1 million more people in New York will catch the virus, etc. etc.

So I'm taking it out on Bears. My honest view is that people drank the Kool-Aid and fell into this media-trap where they let negative news spiral their mental out of control and they ignore/don't trust any positive news (or positive news fails to be reported). They won't consider positive results of medication, they won't consider that maybe things aren't quite as bad as they originally thought. They just want to keep getting this doom & gloom report because they've fully bought-in to the idea that things will never be good again, and they've even grown to kind of liking it.

So when I see the market not quite reflecting that doom & gloom picture that so many pompous, know-nothing Dunning-Kruger nu-/biz/lets wanted to shill to me, I laugh in their face and hope they're losing money. I'm not upset at Bears per se.

About how profitable are buying and selling puts and calls? So far I've just been buying and selling straight stocks (not even day trading. I buy one day and sell a few days later) and have done okay (about net 25-30%) but am curious if there's a better, more effective avenue.

the fun thing about moving averages is that they work on every time frame, it's just that they don't work as well on the daily as they do intraday because of gapping. the "voodoo" shit makes me laugh, i mean it's literally just the average price over a short and longer period of time, reversion to the mean isn't "magic" lmao it's just math nothing to be afraid of kiddos

>>18321560
im saying at least CONSIDER the moving averages before making a trade. in the example i posted, notice how much of the time when the blue line is below the purple it is going down, and when the blue line is above the purple it is going up. notice how if you entered a trade on the candles where it reverses from the purple line, it would actually be a profitable trade depending on how you manage risk.

i feel like this is common sense if you just look at a fucking chart and understand basic 5th grade algebra. but here i am, explaining how when average price is going up that means that price in general is going up, WOW WHAT A CONCEPT.

However, options do allow you to make fence sitting strategies whereby you make money if the thing goes in either direction sharply (straddle and strangle), or you make money if the thing does not move much at all (butterfly, iron condor). Depends on your investment strategy. If you just want to not lose money and never think about it, index/mutual funds and ETFs are fine.
Some reasons you wouldn't want to do this:
If you want high risk/high reward
If you want to learn how the market works
If you have experience in a sector
If you want to fully manage your portfolio
If you want to avoid fees
If you want to try non-conventional strategies

oh yeah, multiple timeframe analysis can be very useful. in short, it depends a lot on what your edge in the market is and your personality, how you like to trade. it also gets a lot more complex than simply fast line crosses above slow line so buy. my point is that AT A MINIMUM you should look at that shit. if the trend is up and you short and it keeps going up you're a fucking dumbass in most cases and don't understand how to read price action. im not going to spoonfeed you my whole system or anything like that, im just saying stop buying in a downtrend or shorting in an uptrend.

i'll give you this much at least: a lot of the game is simply being able to quantify what a strong trend, weak trend, and flat/ranging market is, and how early you can identify that. that's the goal of TA in a nutshell.

That was me. The main shit check I use for fakeouts is volume indicator. Chaikin money flow and similar with a zero line in the middle. I look for line to go above zero and stay there as a buy indicator. Like everything else in TA it's not perfect but it helps. Sometimes volume indicator will go negative on a green day or a crabby doji kinda day, in which case that means trouble brewing if it stays negative the following day. The volume indicator is one of three (sometimes four) gizmos I use to get a feel of price action and trend.

Stock market noob retard here.
Is it really wortwhile to invest $500/monthly into huge national companies unlikely to fail even in the face of a global recession?
Looking at their last peak i'd guess that'd only net me a profit of about $200 for every $500 in a near-best case scenario post-taxes and it'd probably take a couple of years holding them?
Maybe I should be looking at stocks that payout dividends?

again: im just giving you the most basic piece of the puzzle. it would take way too long to explain everything, i could unironically teach a college course on it. a lot of it also relies on a lot of self fulfilling prophecies, especially ones dealing with what tutes pay attention to (it's why the EMA(20/50/200) are so important because everyone and their mother respects those lines).

an EZ mode setup if you're new is to study the VWAP and high probability setups involving it. tutes specifically guarantee the VWAP for whales who want to get in or out of a position, they'll "guarantee the VWAP price". a somewhat decent explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSt0RC1WJKM a more in-depth discussion with someone who literally only trades based on the VWAP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv9G4M3rnfY

Funds are fine but there are no longer barriers to entry like trading commission fees which was one of the main advantages just a couple of years ago. If you have some gumption then just rebuild the index yourself and save the expense ratio :^)
The heavy usage of funds is also skewing indexes that are only loosely grouped. For example the entire energy sector index was sold off because of the oil price wars and lack of demand as investors dumped their sector funds. The external factor of oil surplus has different effects on different portions of the energy sector though, with small oil exploration companies most affected. A midstream supplier of propane shouldn't be affected much, but if large proportion of the sector is owned by funds then they're getting sold at the same rate as those small oil explorers since the index is grouping them together. Then it is up to the stock pickers to re-weight the capital by realizing the error in the fund sell off.

>buy another debit spread to make up for the loss of one of the spreads
>buy another spread to help cover the loss of the one I just bought

>yet it is the best explanation to apply to a long term investment strategy.
He says empirical data shows value stocks beat the index. He discounts dividends because according to his particular financial voodoo stock price = value of the underlying assets because markets are 100% efficient according to his guru's hypothesis.

Yeah I know that's the accepted wisdom, at least to beat inflation in a 15 year timeline.

Not American so I can't really trade any of those due to EU legislation like MiFiD2 stopping them from coming up on the regular platforms here and requiring a lot of workaround work. (mostly because non-US citizens can apparently get assraped on your ETF taxes)
>>18321897
Most advice i've seen claim that the euro ETFs are nowhere near on par with the US ones. That's why i'm mostly considering very "safe" national companies, some of them barely even dropped from Corona panic and are already near full recovery.

unironically just paper trade, bro. find an edge and develop it, understand it inside and out. don't just look at indicators or averages as "magic lines", actually UNDERSTAND what information they are conveying about what price and volume are doing over time. price and volume over time are the only 3 variables you ever have to work with, every indicator is just applying math in some way to those 3 and representing it in some kind of easy to read visual format. everything an indicator tells you, you could theoretically figure out by just looking at a naked chart, indicators help you see things you might not realize are there though.

the basic concept that in a downtrend you should be looking for short opportunities and in an uptrend you should be looking for long opportunities should be obvious and is easily objectively understandable with 2-3 moving averages. they represent your short/medium/long-term trends and those trends relationships with each other. where price is in relation to them, where the moving averages are in alignment with each other, what their angles are... all of these matter.

Vanguard and iShares are active in Europe. You should have no problem finding an S&P 500 ETF from either in country.
