let's be real, even the best hedge fund manager isn't going to generate more than 5% alpha with a diversified portfolio, yet a bunch of people here are going to finish the game with 20%+, because they barely own anything and few of them are going to get really lucky just thanks to probability

I can put in work, but I have terrible charisma, and I don't have many interests beside mathematical oddities (fractals) and complex programming problems. First things first, you need capital. Either your own or someone else's (this is where networking comes in).

Your objective should be growth. You want to take that capital, and grow it. There are a million and one ways to do that, but you have to find the right way for you. Your best bet is to lurk and try to see patterns that fit what you know. If you know fractals and complex programming, watch stocks for a year or two and see where they fall within your models.

Not a problem. The reason I know hate working for others is because I made 50k (after taxes/food/rent/etc.) working for two seperate companies over a couple years. Treated well, had good hours and my own office (in one), but hated every minute of it.

> If you know fractals and complex programming, watch stocks for a year or two and see where they fall within your models.
But then problem lies in creating a suitable model. I can program, and I've done plenty of fractal work, but, as I said, I've only been dabbling in finance and don't know enough to hypothesize.

TIAA-CREF and Vanguard's non-etf indexes do the same thing for smaller fees. Also, just one ETF is silly, you gotta break it up into 30% Large, Medium, and Small CAP US markets, 15% Emerging Markets, and 15% Developed Markets. Malkiel suggests Australian, Canadian, or Norweigen bond index at 30%. All of these indices are available through vanguard

The value of a stock isn't based entirely on what people are buying/selling it at, lots of other factors effect the value of a stock. Therefore your stock's value can change even when trading is closed.

I thought the value is based on the price and the price is the latest trade?

A stock's value is influenced by a shit load of variables, although the biggest one is supply and demand of the stock itself. Take what I'm saying with a pinch of salt though as I'm new to this too.

The commission is something like $10 per trade, so you still need some kind of focus else you are just wasting money on the transactions.

US markets are officially open 9:30AM to 4:00PM EST each business day except major holidays.

Then there is official after-hours or extended hours trading from 4:00-8:00PM EST that will also be reported by most brokerages and tracked. Also there is pre-market trading that happens 4:00AM to 9:30AM.
However not all brokerages client trades during these full extended hours. But most quote sites track the reported price change during these times. And they affect what price a stock opens trading and can continue the stocks momentum after markets close.

I believe this market watch game reports these price changes from extended hours, but does not actually allow order execution.

You are a fag, if you read through the thread you'll see that he's some guy in Dallas that actually has some money and knows about investing and business management. Plus he said first because he's actually ranking first.
