Every time you think about entering your position, look at everything you have and think "what if tomorrow, everything on the stock market lost 1/3 of its value" and "what if this one company files bankruptcy out of nowhere". That's a simple version of what some people call 'maximum drawdown'.
Most options trades you read about on /biz/ and other places are just gambling. There are many good option strategies that reduce risk or minimize downsides. The best thing to do is never put more than a certain percent of your capital into an options play that could go to 0. Majority of your capital should be in stocks supplemented with options. I personally never have more than 20% exposure to options, and I only enter those when I have a lot of confidence.
